Static From Fridge

Hi just bought a new waeco cfx and having a problem with static through the am radio making it usable . First i put it down to the earth on the dual battery and check everything but have found the same issue happens when the fridge is plugged into the cars original 12v and ac100w plugs. Does anybody have one of these fridges and have the same problem ?? Not to sure were to go from here.

The fridge if designed properly shouldn't generate static, but as I don't have that particular model can't confirm if it will or won't.

You could try putting a ferrite trap on the power lead as close as possible to the fridge.

Ive got 2 Waceo CFX fridges ive never had a issue like that, but i use FM when i can or my iphone for music.

Hi mate and it is actually an offence to sell products that cause electrical interference, so I would take a guess and say you have a faulty fridge.

Contact the supplier and take it from there.

Hi thank for your quick replies first thing i tried was some ferrite coils but no luck . Wouldn't surprise me if it is faulty our first Engel had 3 compressors through it already after 5 years all done on warranty. Will be on the phone to waeco tomorrow. The link I've attached shows the noise from the fridge it cause's static even when connected but not powered on then, power and compressor kicks in.

Wow, great sound effects. Just to rule out the car can you plug the fridge into another car? At least you can then go back to the shop and say that you've been able to replicate the static on different cars.

It's illegal to cause radio interference. If it causes interference back through the electrical system (SMPS are known for it) then thats a nuisance but not illegal.

My first thought would be to try a noise suppression unit on it. But thats not ideal. Although, I'd still try it and see what happens.

Not the easiest thing to do, but can you get a multimeter on the power wires while it's running? I'd be interested to know if it has any AC content.

just tried on my other car and yes i get the same noise when the compressor starts up so at least i can eliminate my car thanks amts

Hi RanJ and my post was not that clear.

It is an offence to try to sell any device that causes RFI and all electronic and electrical appliances must confirm they have been tested and certified.

As such, Waeco would not intentionally market a product that emitted RFI, and that therefore means that prado2828’s fridge does not have a design fault but is simply a fault with his fridge.

And as I suggested, he needs to contact the supplier of the fridge and get them to sort out the problem for him.

My Waeco does the same.
Through some experimenting I found that the closer the fridge is placed to the radio aerial, the worse it is!
The Prado's radio aerial is built into the rear side windows, so the closer it is to them, the worse it gets. When the fridge is beside me sitting on the passinger seat, the radio noise has gone!
Maybe a telescopic external radio aerial fitted may solve the problem, or perhaps fitting a supressor to the fridge lead may work.
Stangely though, I also have a Engel, and that does not effect the radio interferance!!
All very strange!!!!
