  • Redarc BCDC1240 40a and battery mac charge rate 24a

Is it possible to charge a Fullriver DC120 battery with a max charge rate of 24A from a Redarc BCDC1240 that outputs 40A? Both items are on the expensive side and I would prefer to replace either.

If your saying you want to limit the charge current to 24A the short answer is no.

Leigh, I'm concerned because the Redarc's output of 40a is higher than the max charge amount of 24a stated in the Fullriver battery specs.

The Redarc will supply 40A if the fullriver will take it, if you need to limit to 20A the you
need a 20A charger. If you already have both the battery and the charger then you could
limit the current somewhat by using a long length of lighter cable, not the best setup
but if you have no choice?

Leigh, my cable is 20mm2, so the cable option is out of the question.

Reading through the forums it was my understanding that batteries only PULL what they need and so there would be no difference between high output from the BCDC vs when the battery is directly charged from the alternator via an isolator type setup ( my assumption). The BCDC charger cannot make more power than what is coming from the alternator, so the BCDC charge should be equal or less than an alternator charge. The BCDC with high output just adds the ability to better manage / float the battery when needed over and above an isolator setup. What do you think?

Batteries charge acceptance is dependent on its make up. A Century marine pro discharged to an SOC of around 50% will for example pull around 60A when first connected to the alternator and over 40A for 20 minutes and over 20A for around an hour.

You will need to monitor the charge current of the full river to see what it draws in a discharged state, if it is over 24A then you either ignore it or take measures to limit it.

In an in car setup a VSR will generally provide superior performance than a DCDC charger, the float ability is generally not required in a car setup, more applicable to 24/7 charging of standby battery banks. The disadvantage is you can't easily limit the current which you could do for example by using a 20A charger, but in reality why would you use a battery with a max charge rate of 24A for an in car setup. Most users with dual battery setups want to minimise recharge times, for instance when touring if recharge times are greater than 3 - 4 hours, a typical drive time when touring your most likely going to have problems. If your only going to use it for the occasional weekend away then not so much a problem.

Thanks Leigh for the feedback. I understand that the battery will only take 24a max when it is flat.

The BCDC is installed in the back of my Prado and the intention is to charge my Arkpak with the Fullriver AGM. I don't drive a lot during the week and do the occasional long weekend trips every 2nd month and maybe 3 x 1 week camps a year. I chose the fullriver because the Arkpak is in the car and I needed a sealed battery. Also I needed the ability to remove the battery pack when we are camping and put it back for a quick charge.

Send an email to Redarc if you are concerned. Contact details on the website or I can send you an address if you like. Good response from my experience. I picked the 25A charger for the reason you mentioned.

How long have you had it for, maybe the seller or Redarc will exchange for you?

I bought it online this week. It is still in the box, I still need a few parts (fuses etc) before I can start the installation. I have the 20mm2 cable, and the Arkpak.
Returning it may be difficult - the price one pay for shopping online. I will try anyway.

There is no need for the LV version in the Prado diesel or petrol. Works brilliantly.
