  • Electrical Problems post water

    Hi all,
With the recent floods around Alice Springs the 150 has seen a bit of water. Nothing deeper than 50cm though.
When starting I've had the engine light, 4LO light and traction control lights on and stay on, but not every time. Had the roadside guys have a look and they said i might have water in the ECU and to get it to a mechanic to go on a diagnostic machine. Will be doing that first thing tomorrow.
Has anyone else had similar? When running the car runs completely fine, only every so often the car wont do anything when i press the start button.
This has only happened in the last 24 hours.
    Thanks guys

    Hi all,
Update for my previous post. Got a diagnostic computer onto it and the crank angle sensor came up as the only issue. mechanic suggested i let it dry out and see whats what then. It wont be driven for the next week anyway so it will give it time

I had the same thing happen with the dash lights just recently after encountering some deepish muddy water on a 4WD course. I was also having a lot of trouble starting but not every time. The RACV man came and checked out the Prado but I couldn't replicate the issue for him, he checked the batteries but said they were fine.

Toyota said it was the starter motor and replaced it under extended warranty. I'm not entirely convinced that was the culprit, I have not had the issue since however. Maybe it was just dirt in the contacts but then why did the dash warning lights jam on once it started?

Yeah it's a bit odd. The roadside assist guy said he had picked up 3 150's for the same problem over the last 2 days. It's the price you pay for having all the creature comforts in the car. All those electronics add up to some big potential issues.
I since have bought my own diagnostic computer which will help in deciding if the problem is something I can drive to the next town without damaging or whether its a critical failure.

If you have driven through water I would be checking the plugs on the gear box
and transfer case for water ingress. It will take forever for them to dry out if
water has found its way in. If you find water has penetrated the seals dry the
connectors and then fill with dielectric grease before assembly to stop it happening again.
