Does anyone know if the headlamps on a 2011 Prado are suitable for conversion to HID lamps? Has anyone fitted HID lights to their Prado?

Read an article that not all headlamps are compatible and a lot of HID converted cars are illegal. Cheers

Regardless of whether they work or not the ADRs contain specific requirements for HID lighting including self levelling anf washers. Without those any retro fitment would be illegal.

And it's a trip over the pits if defected with them if deemed illegal.

Sorry, what do you mean by 'self levelling of washers'? ADR - Australian D.... R....?

Looks like the HID is a dead rubber as after further investigation, you can't retro-fit them into halogen lights. HIDs into HID lights is fine but it is illegal to fit them in NZ into anything else.

The 1st bit should have read as "self levelling and washers" I think. ADR = Australian Design Rules.

Lights have to be self levelling either directly between the lights and body or by the whole body (Kakadu and Grande air suspension). Washers are light washers to keep the lenses clean to minimise dispersion of the light. Fido has ADR. As Piggy said not worth the hassle. Better off with auxiliary lights. You can run HID spotlights legally and lightbars depending what your state rules are.

Also the other main problem which is mostly overlooked is that the reflector is not designed for the light wave, and different bulb output making the brighter light less bright and focused than the original halogen. Making the whole point of "upgrading" pointless, and generally worse.

Either buy the model with the lights you want or fit the best quality halogens you can find. There are a few threads on here but Philips and Narva make some quality brighter replacements.

I've had cars with HID or Bi-Xenon lamps, self levelling and with washers and I was never convinced they were better. I am more than happy to have large halogen lights, the yellow light cuts through rain and fog far better, and the physical size means they are fantastic at shining highbeam in the dark. Much like the Falcon and Commodore are. And no slow warm up delay either.

I think from the research I've done the only good way to do HID is with projectors. Check out Micks HID retrofits

Already convinced that HID are a non-starter. Will look into replacing halogen bulbs with improved ones from Philips, Narva or even Osram as suggested. Cheers

Maybe dont get the Osram Night Breakers - I had a full set blow in just under 12 months, and now one of the second set has blown in just over 8 months.

I know you cannot expect long life from higher output bulbs, but I would have hoped to get 2+ years from a set.

I fitted a HID conversion to the low beams only. I bought a 55W 6000K kit that had the ballasts on the back of the globes. I am aware of the legalities...
Anyway they were working really well until about a week ago when one of the ballasts started having intermittent problems. Then the other one crapped out completely. Will be going back to some bright halogens and upgrading the spots to either HIDs or a LED bar. I bought the high beam conversion kit at the same time but never fitted it because it involves completely removing the headlights which I'm told is quite involved. Will probably sell them.
