Blown rectifier but no warning light?

So my 2010 GXL sounded a bit slow on starting the other day, drove it for 10mins and parked it. Three hours later I started it for the drive home, again it sounded a bit doughy. Got home and turned it off and thought I'd try another start, all I got was the starter solenoid clicking. Grabbed a multimeter and the battery showed 11.6v. Charged it up for a few hours and managed to get a start out of it, still showing about 11.7v at the terminals with the engine running.

Took it back to Toyota, I was there two days ago, and they diagnosed a blown rectifier. They replaced the rectifier and showed me the damaged one and it had indeed blown a little hole in itself!

My question is, should there have been a battery warning light with the rectifier not working as it certainly wasn't charging?

Warning light will only come on if alternator is not charging at all,
with a blown rectifier the alternator would still have been putting
out some charge.
