  • 2010 kakadu stereo

hello there, very first post but long time stalker.

I've got a couple of questions i would like to see if anyone could answer.

the factory kakadu stereo is hopeless and i would like to upgrade to one of these eBay style after market ones so i could have hema maps and music streaming from my phone.

i already know i am going to loose my front and side cameras and my rear monitor ( which i will keep factory unit for when its time to sell) but my question is does anyone know if the kakadu will be plug and play like the gal. is the wiring loom much different? i don't really want to modify anything permanently ( soldering)

anyways any help would be appreciated , pictures of the back of the kakadu stereo would be great.

    thanks brett

what is wrong with the factory map navigation system?

for music streaming, can you just use the USB connection?

It always at least a year out of date even if you have the latest map disk, no traffic alerts or safety camera warnings, and no off-road map capability. It's not hopeless but it could be better. I just use an iPad with Hema maps velcroed to the dash for off-road use. I stream music from my iPod via the USB, works fine.

There are many additional add ons if you know what you are looking for... and without cluttering your dash. The ebay unit will not come close to the oem unit in this instance.

I have also been thinking about a changing things in my Kakadu similar to the OP but I do not want to give up the main Nav display and camera. Instead I'm looking at mounting an iPad mini (mini iPad 2 with 3G which had GPS) horizontally below the climate control fascia and in front of the stereo controls.

The hardest part is making up the bracket as I want the iPad to hinge/tilt up so I can access the stereo controls or change a disc when needed. Basically I am going to mount the mini iPad in one of those hard shell cases and have a couple of small hinges attached to the case and probably mount the hinges to the underside of the climate control fascia. The hinges need to be stiff but not stiff enough to stop the iPad tilting up when needed. I'm on the lookout for hinges now.

I've also found a black right angle lighting cable online which will tuck behind the iPad nicely out of the way for clean look.

I've chosen the iPad because it can easily do the Hema maps, plus all the other things my iPhone has currently like Tom Tom, Dash command(like scanguage), TPMS, music via USB. So my iPhone will be left for calls only. A small Android tablet (with GPS) would work just as well too.
