What tray are you guys using? I need one that can handle corrugations so will a normal battery tray work. I have seen where the location is for the 2nd battery and it looks strong. Hopefully get car this wk. What battery are you putting in? AGM's??
Thanks for any help.

Out of interest, any advice on what sort of plug to mount up back? I have an Engel fridge but was going to get a generic cigarette plug flush-mounted next to the factory inverter for flexibility. I've read though that these types of plugs can jiggle loose on long trips and that Engel or merit plugs are preferable.
Also, I was going to get a voltage meter installed for the second battery, I'm guessing the logical place to put this would be with the plug (in the rear), or do people tend to mount them on the dash so they can be monitor charging progress?

They have, the spot is flat and open and takes an N70 on a tray.
Ive simply used a plastic tray and standard battery clamps, just the same as the factory location...

Thanks for the quick response guys. I'll see how it goes, worst case I might need to wire in a DC charger or fit a booster later.
It looks like they've changed a couple of things regarding the second battery ... to my untrained eye, they appear to have flattened out the problematic air conditioning pipe too.

I really wanted to put LeighW's voltage booster into my 2.8 (took it out from the 3.0L) but as Leigh says - there is no ALT-S and I dont have the electronic skills to work it back. In the meantime my issue was solved as a Redarc BCDC was given to me for my b'day!!
Must admit that I didnt think much of the DC-DC option and considered it a 'bottleneck' as to charging rates, but as a light user of the AUX batt it was worked very well to date.
Hopefully down the track LeighW might be able to confirm more detail and I might get to use the booster as well as the DC-DC

Sim,
The new engine doesn't have an "ALT-S", from my investigations one had a
"ALT-S/ICS" which to me implies it might have a smart charge setup with a
current sensor.
Another car didn't have this fuse either?
I have been unable to find out anything from Toyota as they haven't updated their
on line service manuals, and no feed back on here from current owners as to what
they have found.
If it is a smart charge setup it may be able to be turned off by the dealer, but
until more info becomes avaialable who knows?

Dual battery setup for 2.8 1GD
Hi PradoPointers
Am about to get a dual battery fitted to my new Prado (MY16 with the 2.8 litre D4D).
Have read this thread (and a couple of others) which refer to needing to trick the smart alternator in order to charge the second battery ... does anyone know if this also applies to the current engine?
Thanks - SimLast edited by amts; 06-01-2016, 02:38 PM.Tags: None
