  • Cruise control drops speed when activated - is this common?

Hi all, hoping for some collective wisdom on an interesting quirk with my cruise control.

I picked up my new manual Prado GX recently and have been enjoying the step up from my old 2002 Prado TX - so still very much getting used to the new one.

I've noticed that when I have the cruise control switched on, ie ready to be activated - and I then hold a constant speed, eg 100kph - and then activate the cruise control to lock the speed...
That it drops the speed by approximately 2kph (so back to 98kph) for probably 5 or so seconds and then steadily brings the speed back up to 100kph.

I'm curious as to whether this is a common trait with the 150 cruise control? I appreciate this might sound trivial but it is a bit annoying as is a noticeable slowing down before it regains the correct speed. (I rely on the cruise control a lot on country runs and used it extensively on my old TX and it never did this.)

My GX is a May 2016 2.8 diesel.

Would appreciate any feedback on this.

    Cheers
    Chris

I think thats normal if you turn cruise on when under load going up a hill it speeds up before dropping back to correct speed.

Hi Carl, I'm familiar with the over the top of the hill under load situation you are describing - but this is pretty much the opposite, ie steady throttle, steady speed, flat road - cruise control on already - lock speed - then it slows down before coming back up to the speed you locked it at. Thanks. Chris

At 100k on a flat road my 2010 SX (3 door) drops 4or 5 kph when I engage or re-ingage the cruise.

When I get to the bottom of a hill it does the same thing. Drops 5k before it reapplies the power.

Really quite dangerous and has been that way since new. Dealer and Toyota says it functions as designed and is not adjustable.

My 120 manual has always done that too.
I tend to keep my foot on the accelerator until it picks up.

Hi sweatpea and Whitey1 - thanks for the responses. I take my Prado in for its first check-up on Monday - I'll see what they say and report back.

Jump into someone's slipstream as you engage will help maintain speed til the cruise gets its shit together.

                it's a Toyota thing.
my work car not a Prado does exactly the same thing...

Hi Gordon, slipstreaming over 2.2 tons of Prado seems an unlikely recipe for success. Fred 63 - thank you for your response and perhaps you are right - it would however be a pity if Toyota made a better cruise control in 2002 (as on my old 95 series TX) - than it does in 2016. I'm going to find out.

Yeah I have the same issue with a MY14 Facelift.... It def drops a few kms then engages, usually resulting in an increase of revs (& fuel consumption) to catch up.
I just keep my foot on accelerator for another 3-5 secs very slowly removing it whilst it engages to avoid the catch up.

Bit annoying considering my 2004 poverty pack Falcon cruise control would engage straight away Not too bad once your used to it.

Ghandi, thanks for the response, I was starting to play with it doing that tonight, ie steady speed, then lock it in and continue to hold steady speed for say 5 secs as you mention - then take foot off. Totally agree that it's a bit average to have to manage the process that crudely. I'll be interested to see what Toyota have to say.

In anticipation of the response you'll get from any dealer, I'm thinking we need to petition Toyota Japan for a direct line to their techs for actual real information. At a dealer you get to speak with a Service Advisor or such; most of these guys would not know the difference tween glow plug and a flux capacitor.

This gets a bit more interesting as driving around today I have confirmed it drops speed even after 'holding' the speed with the accelerator for a while - after locking it in using the cruise control. But the kicker for the day is it appears there is a definite fault as it has now twice dropped out of its selected speed completely on the same right hand slipway turn from one freeway onto another at close to 100kph.

You say it dropped out? As in 'set' icon on dash turned off and cruise speed was deactivated?

One of my frustrations with my 150 2.8 auto. My Ranger work truck has no delay at all, neither did the Pathfinder I replaced with this Prado. Seems to be even more pronounced in the auto, it always kicks down a gear to get back up to speed.
