  • Second battery stopped working properly.

    G'day,

With much ignorance and internet use I installed a second battery (pic) a couple of months ago. The second battery is a Century Deep Cycle N70T, 100mah, and I connected it to the main battery via a Projecta IDC25 charger. It doesn't get used much and only really runs an LED light bar and fridge when camping. Everything worked well and a couple of camping trips , one 3000km run to Winton and some beach driving followed.

    Now the problem begins.

I noticed one day the water indicator (pic) was showing recharge. A bit strange but had a look and the battery was completely dry. Nothing. So I filled the water up. I've now noticed the charge doesn't seem to hold nearly as well or long. Also the water indictor is now just solid black.

Had another look and then noticed that there appears to be some kind of corrosion (pic) around the battery itself.

    A- is my battery f'cked?
B- if I buy a replacement will that also get f'cked?
C- what's the deal with the corrosion?

Looks like it's been bubbling away and spat its fluid everywhere. Causing the corrosion.
Possibly an overcharging situation me thinks.
Have you checked voltage outputs etc. is it switching when topped up. Etc.

Looks like over charging or a leak. If the battery has been charging with low fluid levels, then the plates within is probably cactus.

If it was dry you can bin it, seems the charger has cooked your battery, does it have settings
for different types of batteries, if so what did you set it for?

I checked mine today and it was saying needs water going off the indicator so I topped it up now its reading it needs recharging even though when checked with multimeter it reading above 13v even after having the fridge run for a couple of hours to put a load on it.
Any ideas or is it a just watch it for the next couple of weeks and see what happens?

Might need the electrolyte stirring up, try discharging it down to 50% then recharging it.
