hi all , does anybody know if the 1GD alternator has a one way pulley and what it actually does , why its there , benefits therof , etc? Ive not played with one for a very long time till yesterday when i had to replace the alternator on a neighbour's Astra. Would you believe the pulley was not available separately so had to replace the entire alternator , how wasteful is that ???

Clutches for previous models Prado's are available from Ebay etc, I would have thought
they would be available for the Astra, what is the Astra by another name, I assume Holden
don't actually make it?
The clutch reduces the overrun load on the drive belt, if you look at the way the belt drives runs on the prado you have the crank shaft pulley the tensioner then the alternator, if the motor is spinning at high revs then suddenly slows ie change gear the momentum of the alternator would pull on the tensioner creating slack which could allow the belt to come off as well as the load aspect on the belt, the clutch allows the alternator to freewheel and slow down without loading the belt.

You would need to check actual model numbers to see that they are the same alternator.

There are lots of Australian suppliers on ebay selling pulleys for up to the 2014 3.0 litre but you could ask them if they can supply one for the 1GD if you ever need to.
