  • What type of alternator do I have

Hi I’m sure this has be asked before and before anyone asks yes I’ve searched here and google. Amazingly I thought it would be simply a call the service or parts section of Toyota dealerships but amazingly 2 were not sure and the third had the hide to suggest I buy a Toyota service manual and read that...... that sat me on my arse!..

anyway im hoping someone here has a greater knowledge base than the 3 bozo I spoke to this morning. FYI I have a 2018 VX prado and am looking to install (finish) a REDARC bcdc 1225d ... the blue trigger wire more specifically. REDARC’s knowledge base only goes to 2017, I’ve sent them an email as well but not holding my breath given the time of year...poor planning on my part..

anyhoo TIA merry Xmas to all btw

It is a bit of an odd ball in that it could be a variable voltage alternator (redarcs description) but at the moment unless they have changed it recently it still behaves the same as the previous temperature compensating type. If I was you I would run the blue wire along with the others to the cranker and terminate as required there. If at some stage you find you need an ignition input then you can just run a jumper over to the fuse box. PS be surprised if Redarc know!

As I wrote, is ECU controlled but their not doing anything smart with it yet. Will be low voltage though around 13.5V@24C

I hve a 2018 prado.,, so is it a smart alternator or just temp compensated ?

Do I need a dcdc charger with ignition wire ? Or can I use a system like the thunder or other that don’t have a ignition wire ?? As I’m not that keen on a Redarc as the price..! I see the projector dcdc looks ok and cheaper ? But just wondering if I’ll need to wire up the ignition wire or not ???
