  • Dual battery earth point

I will be installing my dual battery set up over the weekend and am starting to over think it I think.

Was as planning on earthing the Aux battery to the earth points below the second battery location. Though I keep reading and I am now wondering am I better to earth it to the engine, main battery, body or a combination of two ie engine and body etc. will be using 6b&s for earth and power.

Curious as to what others have done in their setups. My vehicle is 2019 GXL.

    Cheers

    Tony

When I did mine I ran a negative cable from the main battery to the auxiliary. I also ran a short cable from the auxiliary to the inner guard on the drivers side.

        Cheers David.

been researching this a fair bit today and I think that is what I am going to do. The main battery appears to be grounded to 3 points (body, chassis and engine) so I am more than confident it will be fine with that and a short earth to the body near the auxiliary battery.

My dual battery system was professionally installed and is earthed to the wheel arch & the side wall via short cables. The VSR isolator is also earthed independently. Can run a few earths because your electrical circuit is only as strong as it’s grounding ability. I’m running 4B&S though because I’ve got several power outlets fitted in the boot to draw power from so there are 2 earths to help avoid voltage drop during really hot conditions. I don’t think it’s the norm to earth the aux battery to the engine though. Usually direct to the body or chassis.

I concur with the above comments. Earth your auxilary batteries to the engine and the body. Couldn't hurt to earth to chassis also.
Clean bare metal contacting areas under your lugs or threaded points will help with grounding.

If you connect the negative lead back to the chassis earth point where the main batter is earthed, you will automatically pick up all the earth points that the starting battery has. I've done this on a previous car where I used the battery for a backup cranking battery as well as for deep cycle use. Never had an issue. There's also an earth point right next to where the 2nd battery goes for a handfull of small wires. You should be able to slip another cable lug underneath the factory earth cables.
