  • Damaged Brake Wire (Purple/Violet) From Pedal.....

    Hi All,

I made the mistake of wiring in my brake controller to the wire at the pedal, I've since corrected that but now I'm having various issues with the Prado. I know I'm not the first one to make this mistake and was wanting to know what others have had to correct this? I was thinking I'd need to replace the purple/violet wire I originally spliced into but is that all?

    Thanks in advance.

If you used one of those shitty cheap splice units its probably broken the wire upon removal.. Strip it back solder it and should be good to go.

Nah, I’m not a fan of them. I spliced and soldered. Once I discovered my mistake I cut it out and tried to remove all the solder. The Prado worked for a bit, then I had to wobble that section to get it to start and now it won’t start. I insulated it all so not a shorting issue.

You can buy terminals from toyota with a short length of wire attached, I'll look it up later and get back to you with the part number if you like.

So, I've ordered the repair wire from my local Toyota and they should have it in on Tuesday. Can anyone confirm this question: It comes with one end fitted with a crimp connection but the other end is bare, can I simple join this to the existing wire - removing the section I've spliced into or do I need to find another crimp end and (hopefully) reach the next connector and completely remove my damaged wire?

              Cheers

Just cut the damaged end off and butt splice the pigtail in. I'd use solder and heatshrink, tape up the harness or recover with the the sleeving to make it nice and neat.

Note the screenshot I posted above shows how to remove the terminal from the socket, you'll need a small pick, I use a piece of stainless wiper insert ground down with a screwdriver handle fitted on the end.

I’ve received the repair wire from Toyota but it appears to be larger. Also the push in terminal end is not going to fit into the receiving plug as it's also larger??

That's strange, have a close look at the plug on your car and you should see a 5 digit number like this example in the image here. That is the last 5 digits of the connector part number. Post back here with the number or take a picture of it and the pigtail you've got.

Thanks for your help Adrian, I’ve taken it to an auto sparky as I ended up getting that wire sorted and it didn’t fix the issue. I’ll report back with his findings.... I feel my bank balance taking a hit here - he said worst case is a damaged ECU but hopefully it’s something cheaper.

                        Update:

The Prado is having an over night stay at the auto sparky's workshop. He believes the issue could be the brake pedal switch. I remember reading somewhere on the net when I first looked into this and seeing someone else had been taken down that road with their same issue, with no resolve. So I'm interested to see if this is the fix for mine.

I do hope so! I'll report back as these kind of things can be valuable to someone else in the same boat down the track.

Okay, so my fault was the brake pedal switch. It has a little circuit board and some how I managed to destroy it, the Auto Sparky wan't sure how it happened. He replaced it and the Prado is back in action. Cost was around $450 for 2.5 hours labour and the new switch. I hope this helps someone in the future, but my advise is to stay away from these wires!!

So at a guess the new switch costs $200? damn expensive switch. To my knowledge the switch does have inbuilt electronics of some kind - some form of deceleration sensor . in an emergency stop the brake switch flashes the lights quickly a few times , presumably to warn others behind you of an emergency stop. I have not seen this for myself i always leave a large distance to the car in front anyway.
