  • 2018 Driving Light Wiring Harness with Switch (CANBUS)

    Hi guys,

I'm having issues wiring up my Stedi spotties with my 2018 Prado. I know it has the CANBUS system and I've purchased the ARB wiring loom to suit the canbus system. Have run all the cables that tap into the headlight stalk and provide the trigger wire to the driving light harness. The trigger wire is working 100% correct for all the situations (AHB on/off, stalk forward/back and hi/low beam etc) However my Stedi Pro lights driving light harness has it's own relay and then a 3pin connector back in the cab. (white, blue and black). I've got a AirOnboard push button switch that I want to hook these spotties up to but whichever way I wire this switch it overrides the trigger wire and turns the spotties on regardless of low beam, hi beam or no beam.

I read some other threads and guys have mentioned they've had issues getting the on illumination to work with the light, and have had to resort only to the dash illumination for the light.

My issue is regardless of which way I wire the light as soon as I push the button in the cab the spotties come on.

I've attached the switch diagram and a rough drawing of my setup.

If anyone could help point me in the right direction that would be great.

    Thanks,
    Brad

From memory the standard Toyota loom switchs the negative which is why I believe the “on” light doesn’t work with the Stedi switch.
I don’t follow how you have two looms the ARB loom and the Stedi loom. That said I fitted the genuine Toyota loom which connects directly to the driving lights. Does the ARB loom have relays? If so then you should not need the Stedi loom & relay.

Not sure if you have this working yet, but I can see a few issues with your wiring diagrams, however I need to know what the two wires connected from the ARB harness to the STEDI Harness are (can’t make it out from the diagram) & what signals they are providing & when.

Having had autoelectrician install complicated Toyota loom, the only problem is having the Aironboard switch illuminated. Any suggestions?

ARB took a couple of goes to get mine right in early 2018 - based on a combination of ARB and Toyota loom and relays (I know this doesn't help answer the qn).

... and we decided to leave the illumination unilluminated. When it was connected the switch would always stay on, even with the vehicle off.

My experience with driving lights and CANBUS was not dissimilar to some above - frustrating!

I have a good mechanic and a reliable auto electrician I have used for over a decade. I was unsure about which loom to use (Toyota, ARB or light supplied). The ARB one was about $70, Toyota $170 ish and the light supplied one was a little underwhelming. I thought that the Toyota was typically over priced so went with the ARB loom.

When my auto electrician showed me the ARB instructions I should have realised it was going to be a time consuming and expensive installation. Many steps and photos explaining what to do over many pages. Comprehensive yes, simple no.

So I have ended up with very well installed driving lights and a light bar on a Rhino platform, with AirOnBoard switches that are illuminated at night. What I don't have is the money to do a couple of other things I would've liked to, because the install of the loom took somewhere between 4-8 hours. It's not a criticism of my mechanic and auto electrician, just a customer beware. If you're guys are not familiar with CANBUS or the loom I would not hesitate to use the Toyota loom. The extra $100 on price seems justified from the plug-n-play installation that has been described in other threads.

Love my GXL, but sometimes do wonder if the GX might have been a better platform for touring due to its simplicity (non CANBUS) and extra storage space.

The guys that installed my lights used a module... stinger brand module I think. Anyways, took it into them and they had only just had the rep visit them about the new module for CANBUS cars and wiring in headlights and they told the rep no need they haven't come across that situation before, then I turned up. Anyways, we looked at the Toyota Harness and how much that was going to take to install compared to the module, I went with the module as it was less invasive to install and can be removed easily if required. I'm not all over what how it works although It has worked fine and I have it wired through a Stedi light switch. The green indicator light on the switch only comes on when the spotties are on, not when the switch is pushed in, talking to the installers, no easy way around that. Anyway, it was installed by guys who do Car Audio, Radios etc, and I believe the exposure to the modules they use in installing audio , aftermarket central locking etc they knew about this Canbus Module. Just another option I guess, the module was around $200 from memory, maybe a bit more and maybe it's a good alternative to a wiring loom, maybe not, as it seems like a new product so time will tell.

Did you ever sort this issue out?
I'm about to buy the Stedi's and have a similar AOB switch - but I did go the Toyota harness.
Any tips for a novice at installing this stuff?

Hey there.. I can’t even get the lights to work with stedi piggyback harness and arb wiring loom installed as instructed. Switch lights up on high beam at the switch only.. I’m sure I’ve missed a post somewhere here maybe? Cheers
