Hi,
I have been doing a bit of research and came across this forum. It looks like the Altitude and the VX models are tricky (if not impossible to get a stereo upgrade). I have a 2012 Altitude and have been looking at ways to upgrade the stereo so that I can use Android Auto / Apple Car Play.
After a few months of research - it appears this is very hard to do due to the factory Sat Nav unit (which also controls the back row entertainment / drop down screen).
The fascia alone costs more than the head unit and installation, and it comes with certain issues like losing control of certain features like the front and back sensors appearing in the main screen
See: https://stingeraustralia.com.au/product/jptoy06/
I found a video on Youtube on how it might be done as a second screen -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f5CUpcBoQ24
The issue with that particular use case is that you always have to look down, so if you use Google Maps etc,
I was looking at the Alpine Halo9, and some Kenwood wide screen units which fits nicely into the 200 mm space where the existing DVD player is installed. Those units appears to have a pop-out screen so you can actually angle it higher so hopefully it sits over the air-cond control.
Does anyone (owner or installer) have any experience in this type of install? Anything to look out for / I have missed?
I think the end result is a new head unit, connected to the AMP, while leaving the factory screen for the camera, sensor displays and control of the rear entertainment unit (which will have to rely on the headphone out in the back seat).

They may be able to help with a replacement unit as well.

For those of you who are still looking for a solution for the Altitude Model - in late 2020, a portal Android Auto / Apple Car Play compatible unit was released.
It is called a Coral Vision Portable 7" LCD Touch Screen.
Mine arrived this week and it is pretty good. I couldn't use the mounting that came with the unit because the screen is quite large and can obstruct your view in the front windscreen, so the alternative was a DVD-Mount bracket and attached to it. Screen now sits just above the factor DVD unit in front of the air cond control panel.
So far so good, very responsive, and works well with audio etc via the standard AUX in.

I have a 2012 VX Prado and i have pulled stereo out took photos of plugs etc, and been guaranteed stereo ebay would fit and work apple/ android upgrade, and it didn't plug and play, wites would need cutting, hazard light a problem, so i returned it and got refunded, facebook marketplace and can buy a unit with facia but was told i would need to buy a $300 wiring harness as well as unit, this is from a proper stereo installer in Sydney.

Have people looked brands like vhedia or teyes cc3 2k from aliexpress? They do plug n play screens with facia for atleast 2013 up.
Also tricky with vx/Kakadu because they use a JBL unit with a amplifier but the above units work with tthat.
Expect to pay north of $600 for a fast response and 2k screen versions.

I have a 2011 VX and installed a new Chinese no name brand GPS head unit in 2011. It has its glitches every now and again and when it finally stops working I'll probably exchange it with this.

This will not fit VX Prado, look at top image. It is wrongly advertised like most aftermarket units, i even pulled my unit out 2012 VX Prado and took photos of plugs and back of original unit, they do not plug and play, worst of all nothing supports hazard light switch to work, they say it relocates from right to left, but don't be fooled its b/s. I have sent a unit back and got refunded after 10 messages of questions from me, them assuring it will fit and everything will work, also you want front and rear sensors to work with camera.Originally posted by starbuck76 View PostI have a 2011 VX and installed a new Chinese no name brand GPS head unit in 2011.
