The saga continues. Took it back today and they claim the battery is a problem; it can't supply enough current and the 'spike killed the last amp'. Have given me a loaner battery for a week...
Very dubious as it worked fine half the time, and the new one has the same issue, albeit less often, especially lately in warmer weather. Also still shows an error code on one of the diagnostic screens, although the other screen now says "OK" instead of "NG"... They claimed it would be more probable in cold weather as battery performance is degraded (which is true of batteries). Not sure about the spike killing the amp... if it is the battery I suspect it is a case of the AMP not getting sufficient power when starting the car to detect all the speakers properly... but hard to prove now that I've paid for a new amp.
Will see what the next week brings.
