  • Intermittent Mute on Radio 2022 GXL Prado

    Hi All

A bizarre fault appeared in my 2022 GXL Prado yesterday. Driving along and the radio suddenly muted, except there is no mute option on the radio. The volume level was fixed at 26 and didn't
respond being turned up or down on both the radio and the steering wheel. I got home and left the car for a few hours went out and started it up and the radio was working. I checked blue tooth, USB Am FM and handsfree and they all worked with sound. Jump in it this morning and no sound drive around and leave the car for about an hour. After leaving the car parked for a while I started it up and the radio worked for about 1 minute and muted itself again. Get home leave it for an hour start it up and it works again.

At this stage I'll add that everything else on the head unit is working, except with no sound.

I rang the nearest dealer who is 70 km from me. Whilst they were sympathetic they said it would be at least 4 weeks before they could have a look at it. The next nearest dealers after that are 100km then 220 km away.

    Anyone had a similar issue?

Does it happen with any FM station?
Does your stereo have DAB? Is it only affecting DAB stations?

On FM, but affected all sound output. So no phone, GPS, AM, FM, Bluetooth or Apple Carplay.

        Update 04/11/2022.
The audio finally died on Tuesday, no sound, but everything else works GPS, Carplay etc. I happened to be in a town with a Toyota Dealer, unfortunately the Service Manager wasn't around, but one of his staff had a look, took some details and let me leave. I got a call that afternoon from the Service Manager saying that I'd have to book it in for a service with a 4 week wait so he could check it was plugged in and take the serial number and check with Toyota to see if it was a warranty job.

If it's a warranty job then Toyota will send my unit to the manufacturer who will then decide if they deem it a warranty job. If so they'll send the dealer a refurbished unit for installation. The timeframe is at least 4 weeks to get into the dealer, then another 4 weeks to send it to the manufacturer and I presume another 4 weeks to get a booking for a service. That's not including Christmas shut down. At this rate it'll be easier to buy an aftermarket one and have it installed by an auto electrician.

Contact Toyota Australia. Tell your story, the proposed timeline offered to you, discuss with them merchantable quality and what you consider a reasonable time to resolve this issue and see what they are prepared to do to help. Ultimately, dealers are an agent working on behalf of ToyAus when doing warranty work and there's no motivation to fit you in. Document everything at the time it happens.
If you feel you're still not being heard, then review the current consumer guarantees described in law and decide how you then want to proceed.

Sounds more like your dealer is putting long time frames on the issue cause they don't want the work. Contact Toyota Australia and ask them where they will send you to sort this out..

              27/11/2022 update.
The radio has been dead for a few weeks now and my mechanic has been away. Anyway my mechanic got back from holidays and ran his scan tool which came up with a "B15C3 "Code which is Speaker Output Short. He's been talking to the Dealer who wants him to check the amplifier and head unit connections which he's doing tomorrow. The Dealer said they'll review my mechanic's findings and advise me the next steps to take. I'll update shortly.

At the moment I've borrowed one of my kids Bluetooh speakers to listen to music and have a hands free phone.

                Update
After much head scratching and backwards and forwards between my local mechanic and the Dealer a solution may have been found.
It may have been a misaligned wiring harness under the console. Apparently if you move the audio harness it must go back into a certain position otherwise it may short the speakers out.
So if you've had the console out for auto electrical work you may inadvertently moved the audio wiring harness which may result suddenly lose sound. I believe that Toyota is issuing a Bulletin about it.
