how does the GPS work?

hi guys,
i am about to install an aftermarket android headunit after being very impressed with the one i did in the wifes car. and it got me thinking.

how does the factory navi gps work? mine is a 2015.
i know the maps are on the SD chip but how does it know where you are.
cutting to the chase, the android units need an sim card to work for navi.

was just wondering if i can take advantage of the way toyota do it.

the wife just uses carplay in her aurion.

Are you asking if the factory unit has a GPS antenna?
If the aftermarket unit needs a sim card to work it is using cell towers for location and mapping data as opposed to having the maps loaded and a GPS chip/antenna.

There will be aftermarket headunits that you can load a map program/app on to and have a integrated or remote GPS antenna. Those that do most likely will not be the cheapest as the better functionality will add cost. For example the Polaris 7" unit from GPSOz.

yes i guess that's what i mean.

can i use the gps antenna that toyota has somewhere?
is it an antenna in the glass for example or is it in the factory headunit?

i was just going to use carplay and google maps or waze. I wouldn't pay for a data only sim if that was the option.

ok so yeah there is a factory antenna. and i found what the plug looks like.
and then found this

so ill give it a whirl and get back to you all in a bit. im assuming it will give the android apps the gps location they need

no joy with the factory antenna doing anything more that the aftermarket one. obviously toyota sd and headunit work to provide gps.
loving the upgrade and more than happy. i added a wireless charging pad and dash cam too

sold the whole headunit. 300 supercheap but at least its not in landfill
