  • What 2nd Battery Are You Using?

    Hi To All,

Just a short question .......I'm interested to know what size (Amp/hr) and type of 2nd battery are you using if you have a dual setup?

    Many thanks.

    Neale.

I have a 60ah Supercharge Allrounder in mine (petrol). You can fit bigger in the diesel as the power steering reservoir is in a different spot.

I've got a Supercharge MRV50 in my GXL diesel. Just got back from a 7100km trip - battery worked fine including keeping the fridge going for 5 days with only about a 30 min trip in the middle.

                g'day Louie

no haven't swapped the starter battery still the same

They used a 120 series diesel tray and cut out and bent the tray to suit , They have cut away the corner where the aircon pipe is to clear that

The trojan battery is 275 long / (actual base of battery is 260 but the plastic lugs for the rope handles extend at the top to 275 , Width is 170 x 200 high ,

Sorry mate no Photo's , Don't know how

Re: What 2nd Battery Are You Using?

While the topic is second batteries, my question is what type of system are you using?
I am currently looking at the Redarc SBI12, ABR Sidewinders DBi 120 and either a Redarc or CTEK DC-DC Charger.

Any advice or experience from your own systems would be appreciated.

Re: What 2nd Battery Are You Using?

I fitted an n70 sized AC delco maintenance free marine deepcycle/starting battery. HCM27SMF 97Ah 680CCA and I have got Sidewinder DPi120. I will eventually replace the starting battery and will fit the same as my aux battery..
I liked that fact that it disconnects the two batteries at 12.4V, compared to 12.7 like some others. So it does take some charge out of the starting battery, which I like.
But so far my fridge has only been used twice and then only one over a couple of days in winter and it all worked fine.
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

Re: What 2nd Battery Are You Using?

I did the dual battery install a fortnight ago:
ABR-Sidewinder's kit. swapped the starting battery for the axillary and fitted the mrv70 as the starting battery.

The only issue I had with the install was the 2nd start light kept coming on intermittently. I disconnected the batteries fro about 10 minutes and reconnected - problem gone. It looks as though the computer needed a reset even though when I installed the system the batteries were connected for a couple of hours.

Everything seems to be working a treat, now to start fitting up all the accessories.

Re: What 2nd Battery Are You Using?

I installed an allrounder 80AH in my petrol. (could fit 105AH AGM but this one only cost $179 and Autobarn)

Very easy job and no need to swap starting and aux battery locations.

                          I used the following:

$12 Plastic battery Tray from super cheap (battery should go in plastic tray not metal!!!)
$14 Battery hold down bolts\clamp also from super cheap. (these hold the bat down from the points that are already there just like the other side.
$9 Two L shaped galv. brackets bent to required angles to relocate resivoir and puss aircon pipe out about 20\30mm

I could then afford a Pirhana DBE180s system with the cash saved by not buying a Metal tray that bolts down to flat (thin) sheet metal and over time (relativley short time) pulls those up and cracks paint.

I guess what I am saying here is that the Prado already has it own Dual battery platform and point for clamp bolts to slot into at the bottom so WHY!!!! pay upwards of $170 for something that is already there??????

                            Zerosects,

I was only looking at the start battery the other day and comparing the drivers side area to the passenger side. I was thinking of doing exactly what you gave done as spending money on the tray is the same price as a battery. Could you post some pictures of your setup and let us know how it is holding up.
