    Thanks Greg,

That's exactly how mine acts as well. It seems normal to me, haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary other than slightly noisier with the chip for the first 1-2 mins at startup and driving. I'm fine with it the way it is and will keep tabs on it into the future. Very happy with the car in its first 15000.

    Cheers,

    Chris.

Yes I have exactly the same thing with mine, very noisy under load for the 1st few minutes of driving when cold then settles down,

So disconnected chip this morning and guess what, no cold engine rattle, but in saying that I'm sure mine was noisy before the chip, its just that ever since my 10000km service I've had the suspicion that my Prado had been detuned slightly, it just didn't feel the same when I picked it up that day. Felt like it didn't have the same low down get up and go as previously and hence my decision to purchase and fit the chipit chip.
Also that could be the reason why I seem to able to run tune 9 without any fault codes, also ran tune 10 briefly without a problem, but don't have EGT gauge so didn't leave it there.

My wife has noticed the rattle from our 2011 150 d4d with only 7000km as she drives it more then I do. I had put it down to cold engine but now will be talking to the dealer at the service at the end of the month. Will let you know how we go.

My rattle has started to annoy me so i decided to see what would happen when i removed the chip. Guess what?... no more rattle. The car drives like a slug now but its quiet. I think i will leave it out for now until I find out what the problem is.

Pretty much, lasts until the temp gauge reaches the little symbol for the temperature, then she calms down and quietens heaps. Haven't removed the chip as yet but will do as soon as this cyclone comes and goes.

Puregeek, you're unlikely to have the rattle in a new car. The diesel is noisy on start up, suggest you compare it to another one maybe at a car yard.

I agree with Steve, the D4D in the 150 is noisy until it warms up, particularly under load e.g. driving up hill. From what I understand of the 'death rattle' you really know when you've got it.

I think its coming down to the chip. Without the chip the sound is barely there and i dont really notice it. But when the chip it installed the rattling is really amplified at the exact rpm. I can't exactly bring it back to toyota and say "see how noisey the engine is with the chip installed!" =).

@krypto - The sound sticks around even after then engine has time to warm up (15-20min). Im down to the decision of chip for power but more noise or plesant drive and less power.

                      Puregeek

why don't you try lower tunes and see if the rattle is as amplified?

Yeah played around with the tunes today. Lowering it down to tune 1-4 reduced the noise heaps. Does anyone else with a chip installed have a noisier engine?

                          Guys
                          Too much worry about rattles.
                          It's a diesel they rattle.
Owned heaps of them and can tell you the D4D is quiet.
Try a Pajero then talk about rattles.

Drive it and enjoy the ride

                            The infamous rattle.

Just a question: I have just been reading some posts on the infamous rattle but its all back in 2008. I have a 2011, 150 Prado. Any up to date info on the noise?
