Does a diesel additive like chemtech help the longevity of the injectors and fuel moisture problems?

Hi ,Warnsie, mate I put 50ml of Flash lube in my tank at every fill whether it be half full or not and to date I have had no problems .Roo mate I see earlier in this thread you mentioned that the Turbo can play up especially if the engine bay gets too hot .I see you all recommend a idle down which is a good idea as heat is a killer also of transmissions . So I ask the question ,Has anyone thought of adding a air scoop on to the bonnet ? I did this with my earlier 4x4 just to get decent air flow and it seemed to help . Would you suggest that or are there too many problems associated with it ?? I see here in SA tomorrow 15/01/2014 we are looking at 46degrees .Cheers Foxy

It has been done on the 120s to help get air through the intercooler but as the 150 intercooler is in front of the radiator there hasn't been anyone do this. Not sure it would help. I seem to remember a V6 120 owner put one on for that fully sick look so if you track him down ask whether it has any influence on engine temps.

Hi, yes I'm going by what Roo said earlier in this thread .Maybe having a scoop above the turbo may help ? Also I have been looking to put a EGT fitting and gauge on the exhaust as I do a bit of towing but they seem to be hard to find for the turbo 150 compatible any ideas where and what brand ??? Cheers Foxy

Foxy Roo actually said it isn't a big problem in Prados more an issue with the HiAce. As for exhausts there are plenty of threads and even a new one recently about exhausts however go to Matt150's build. Matt has done a good write up about what he chose and why including pricing and pics.

There's two schools of thought on this one. Fuel additives cause the water the emulsify and pass through filters. If the water passes through the filter there's a chance of having corrosion over time as a result. I recon it's better to have the filter trap the water so it can be drained off.

Excessive additive results in unburnt ash on the injector tip and combustion chamber.

Probably nothing wrong with additives if used occasionally and in the right proportions rather than every tank in excess amounts.

I used Chemtec every 5000km up until I changed my injectors at 140 000km. I dosed 300mL per full tank just before each oil change. When the injectors came out, they had a lot of ash on the stem and nozzle. I didn't have noticeable oil consumption nor leaking injector seals which leads me to believe it was excess additive related. A local diesel specialist suggested the same. No 1 to 3 were well within tolleance, No 4 was on the borderline (2.9).

I've done 10 000km on new injectors without using additive however I use blended fuels such as Shell Diesel Extra or Vortex Diesel as they come with additional additives.

gxl-d4d, Mate I know what your saying I don't always understand as you have said there are so many variables . As a farmer (EX) I should say and having worked with diesels all my live one thing i have learn t is that unless you give a diesel a good workout from time to time you will end up with glazing and a lot of carbon build up .So taking my girl out towing and after a short time there is a notable difference in performance and economy . Diesels do not like the short stop start scenarios no matter how well they are kept and how modern they are . So I believe keeping things clean (extra fuel filter, oil bypass system, oil catch can ) is the way to go. BTW I also change my engine oil and filter every 5K no matter what using Delo 400 , trans oil every 25-30K including extra in line oil filter and cooler , diff and trans case every 60K. I'm currently at 75K on my Prado SX Shortie and have not, till now, had to touch anything (touch wood) As I believe prevention is better than the cure. Cheers Foxy
