Hi Davros, Not sure how the copper unplated seals ended up in the late car? Thats definatly naughty.

Davros, you are spot on with the material stuff too. In the true tradition of Dr Who, they all need to be EXTERMMMINATEDDDD!! For that omission.

Just a quick question, would using a higher cetane level diesel help .I see some fuel suppliers are selling a higher level one .I'm guessing it to be similar to using a 98 oct as against 91 oct???? or am I up the wrong tree ??? just trying to think of ways to lessen carbon. I have been using Flashlube since new and no troubles as yet Cheers Foxy49

Hi Foxy, this injector seal leak has very little if not nothing to do with fuel, it doesn't matter what fuel you use, a leaking seal will leak eitherway, and allow very hot, very high pressure gases past the seal and escape into the rocker cover area, this is where the carbon lumps are created, in the oil sytem under the rocker cover, not inside the cylinder.

Just to clarify, we are talking about the seal (copper or silver coloured washer) that seals the injector to the combustion chamber head.

Once in the carbon lumps are created under the rocker cover, it builds up & flows via gravity into the sump, collects, sucks up onto your pickup screen, eventually cloogs, starving engine of lubrication, & killing it!

The pistons need oil not just for lubrication, but a colling jet shoots oil under the pistion to keep it cool. If it gets too hot due to lack of cooling oil flow through the jet aimed under it, it will expand & jamb in the bore....Its all over then.

        Hope explanation helps

Landuser ,Thanks mate ,I know what you're saying I was just hoping against hope there might be a easier answer to this issue.Even after the contributions given here there. seems to be no clear way .Skywalkerrun seems to know what he's on about so it means like someone said we have a high maintenance vehicle .I'm almost pining for my old Ford Explorer back at least I knew where I stood with her.It seems we need to be on the tails of our dealers to get the just results we need.It also seems we need to change the seals with aluminum (Coated) seals .Do the dealers have them??? Cheers Foxy49

            G'day Foxy,

As long as your engine is still running, you have hope! Most important thing is to drain sump and look into your sump plug. If you see a clear screen, then you are one of the lucky ones!, If it is dirty, you got to drop the sump and clean it out ASAP. This is not expensive up to this stage.

ALso, Looks like the rule of thumb is change the Injector seals every 45,000KLM, to avoide excessive buildup if a leak occurs. Even changing the injector seals is not expensive, If the Injectors are OK.

What is very expensive is that with no warning from Toyota on this issue, like they have done with customers in Europe, Then Without this cheap free lookaround the sump & Injectors, you could end up with a very expensive blown motor.

In short, If you motor is still running, you can fix it very cheaply and end up with a very reliable great vehicle. Outside of this either "little", or "Big" Bug, the D4D engine is a very robust good performing little donk!

My 1st blog on any site. Thanks all for your info. I only know the basics, so all this is super-interesting. Photos are fantastic.

With all the recent publicity (Sydney Daily Telegraph Carguide 11/5/12) could we as a group make representations to Toyota to get a fix available at their cost? We should not let this opportunity pass! 5 years to sort this problem out is absolutely unacceptable.

If we have no luck, where could I get an inspection gadget to enable me to view the sump pickup through the sump drain hole? What should I ask for and ~ cost?

Too Right P-rado! But you would think it be better for Toyota if on a case by case basis, those that go to them for a little help on this, simply get some FOC help like those in Europe?

If you go to a Toyota dealer, they will already have a scope tool to get you a shot, This was the same tool they used on the chassis issue.

So they can Easily do this inspection for you with equipment already supplied by Toyota. Although the cost and wether we should be paying at all is certainly the big question. I am certainly still waiting for a reasonable answer...patiently.

At then end of the day, most of us will turn up again in the not so distant future to buy another 4WD or two, and with the right customer treatment, why wouldn't it be another Toyota..We just want to see some unbrakable customer service!

Welcome P-rado, good to see you, you will find these forums can be mind blowing and a little scary especially when we are talking about this issue .Landuser has really great information regarding this issue as do others ,we just want Toyota to hear us that's all and maybe help with the repairs that seem to be needed at some stage,I guess one step is to make sure your book is stamped and signed at every service and make sure your service people are well aware of your concerns and have some record you have alerted them .I guess the louder the noise the more notice they may take as an example with the earlier MUDFLAPS which can now be changed under warranty.Take care be safe and enjoy the ride Cheers Foxy49

Been thinking of different reasons for this problem yes I know the pressures and the seals but even so why the excess carbon. It can only come from 2 sources ie the oil and fuel.It seems fuel may not be the problem so it leaves the oil .Has anyone thought of using a fully synthetic oil .Yes I know it is dearer but could it be PART of the answer OR is it entirely the fault or design of the seals ? Cheers Foxy49
