Interesting (if not worrying) stuff guys. Why don't all the dealers check the oil pick up as at matter of course during an oil change if this issue is so big?

I for one will definately be asking when I take the truck in for the 40k (35k on the clock) service.

Wow, something else to keep an eye on. I will get Toyo to inspect the screen at the next service and change injector seals too.
Found this OTEK inspection tool for around $37 - just plugs into a laptop... for that price I ordered one and will check it myself.

Injector seal leak=Oil Pickup block=engine failure D4D: Campaign now on in Europe

Same thing happens to differential oil if it's not changed regularly. Can I ask you Landuser what brand of engine oil and what grade you were using? What did Toyota Service say about that problem with the blocked screen? It's really bad that. I hope you got that PM. Number two cylinder seems to have a problem there with lubricant, note the injector housing and the build up. Same problem as the sump and sump screen. How was the oil viscosity around the oil filter outlet and the oil cooler? I would be checking the oil cooler if I was you. That problem there goes wider than the injector seats or seals in my opinion. How many Kms had the vehicle done? The winter in Europe was pretty cold this year, did you use the right oil for the conditions? I would like to know more about this if I can Landuser.
You won't get the Otek Scope for $99.00 but the one at Aldi would do the job. Have a look at the one at Repco too as it might be a better resolution.
          The Roo.
          G'day Roo,

-Service schedule managed by larger Toyota Dealer, By the Book, inc Oil!
-Umm, A couple of blocked screens now and it kind of freaked them out!
-You are correct, Blocked Oil pickup=NO Oil for Cylinder, but worst of all, no cooling oil for Piston! In an instant, piston gets hot, decided to grow, and Cylinder has no room for him, SO they seriously rub each other the wrong way...permanently.
-Sump & Screen Gravel originally came from Injector Gravel, Injector gravel moved downward to become Screen gravel, Gravity can be a pain! Injector Gravel is made from High Temp Pressure Leak Into Rocker cover.
-My engineering analysis tells me: Simple Injector Leak=Slow steady Carbon Sausage making machine=Broken up Carbon In Lubrication system=Lots Of Broken up Carbon lumps over time moves downward=Stuck in Sump & can't escape even with regular Oil Changes=Stuck in sump due to drain bung design=All Sucked up on Screen=Blocked Screen=Oil Starvation=Dead Engine As Above.

Unfortunately the equation is simple and very very expensive one, If basic inspection of the symptoms are not carried out.

Check for Injector Leaks, Definately Check for Screen clogging at same time, Rectify, replace seals a 45,000 Intervals per Toyota NZ.

          Toyota I think even agrees:

          http://www.toyota-tech.eu/toms_cabs/EN/1KET-015.pdf

Let a Toyota Dealer do the check & Even Snap a happy shot for the family album....They have the Otek scope!

In OZ this should be FOC as well! so you can keep your $99.00 to buy some Aldi Chocolate.

Just found out about another Identical Engine failure at 120,000 KLM, This was another in OZ not Europe.

Don't think the cooler is related to this failure, Carbon chunk origin was from only one Injector, all other were spottless, and had never manged to start leaking. Engine was clean apart from collection of carbon gravel.

Hope this helps understand the nature of this D4D problem.

Your equation describes exactly what occurs with a seal leak Landuser.
Personally, I do not believe that toyota was really on to this as early as the tech bulletin would have us believe. The doc you link to has models affected as follows:
            KDJ120
            June,2004
            Through October,2007 and
            KUN26
            October,2006
            Through
            April, 2008

Doesn't explain the August 2010 KUN26 that we did, which had the copper seals.
That vehicle was a local council, leased D4D with 60,000kms on it when the work was done. Nothing in the paperwork or on the vehcile indicated the that work had been done prior to this.
2008 Diesel Prado with extra stuff added. I drive it on the road and other places too.

              G'day Davros,

Mate, that is a mystery one, a virgin 2010 D4D with copper seals? Sound like a parts bin mix up on that one....Ohh Boy! I hope somebody didn't run out of plated seals somewhere along the line and looked in that dusty old bin that was half full of copper ones and said....They should be alright shouldn't they???? That would through a spanner in the works.

interesting stuff, due for my 80k service, so ill get some snap shots of the pickup with my bore scope when we do it.

That shot of the injectors is pretty telling and downright scary

I am glad to say that I have been in front of this one (being concerned about the seals) and have been doing regular compression tests on all my 1KD customers. Now I will have to stick a camera up it's arse as well. Talk about an anal engine, ah, ah, get it. My stupid sense of humour.

Spoke to the local service manager the other day, (still discussing tailshaft, mudflaps and right front guard rattle) and mentioned this issue and he told me he had never heard of this issue. May have to add another dealer to the shit list I think.

Having worked for a technology manufacturer, I am going to assume he is aware of the issue but can't say anything. Admitting that there is a problem with a product is never going to make the complaint go away unless you follow it through. I'm guessing the only things dealers are only allowed to acknowledge as "known/common problem" are ones which Toyota Australia have issued formal statements about.

Holden had a similar problem with the Rodeo engines about 3 or 4 years ago. We have a 2007 model Rodeo at work, it went in for a routine 40,000km service one day and the dealer rang back to say we need your vehicle for about a week as we will be replacing the engine. It was exactly the same problem - leaking injector seals causing carbon build up - but I don't think it was widespread and Holdens answer was to replace the whole engine straight up.

Interesting that the article shows a picture of the 150 but only talks about the 120? This article appears to relate to buying second hand 120's not new 150's. I reckon if you showed this to a dealer they would say that only applies to a 120 D4D. Better to show the other article regarding the new Hilux.

Sometimes the online Articles can have a different pic. I'll have to check what pic was used in the Herald Sun when I get home cause I didn't notice that myself!

Is the problem with 120 Prado diesels and has been rectified in the 150 model or is it still an issue ?
