  • How much FUEL can be USED in the TANK before you RUN OUT?

    Guys....

Just curious here, but with the 150ltrs that the Prado's hold, how far can you drain them down b4 u start to run out of fuel?

I know u should never get down to those sorts of levels in your tank, but I'm mainly looking at a emergency situation here where for some reason u get caught out (eg: town has no fuel) and u have to test the limits of your fuel tank capacity. How Low have people let their fuel tanks go b4 they started to notice problems??

The most I've ever put in is 136ltrs..... which apparently is 14ltrs left?

This is also a thread that interests me.

There seems to be a lot of fuel left in the tank when the gauge indicates empty & the trip computer indicates 0 kms left.

The most I have been able to get in is 134 litres and this was trickling the last 10 or so litres in.

BTW I do not fill up at high flow pumps & usually use Shell.

      +3 for this info..

Would be good to know where the fuel pickup is as well (and how it is positioned in the tank)....A couple of months ago I was watching the 4WD monthly video and one of the guys in the 60series broke down on the side of steep climb. Problem was fuel pickup, so I guess he didn't have much fuel in anyway...

Would not like to be stuck on the side of a steep hill with no fuel..

Disco4 -- Why don't you use High Flow? (Maybe something I should know.....)

No high flow at the local Shell & I thought the low flow reduces the likliehood of air locks.

A bit "Off Topic" here, but I always find Caltex/Shell diesel foths up really bad and takes forever to fill up to the Top, but BP Ultimate seems be the only one that doesn't foth up.... but BP must also have "non-ultimate" Diesel fuel as I've encountered a cheaper BP servo and filled up there and it was exactly like filling up at Shell/Caltex.... The price u pay for getting 5cents/ltr cheaper fuel.

            Rob,
I have the petrol kakadu and have pushed it well beyond the "0 Range" notice on the computer.
The low fuel warning light is supposed to indicate 20 litres left in tank.
As soon as that comes on I set a trip metre to zero and watch the kilometres form there - based on the current average usage I have found that the 20 litres left to very accurate. Got well over 140 litres into the car and no sign off running out prior. Not an ideal way to find out, but i was stuck in middle of nowhere and station in town closed - no choice but to push on - a very nervous trip for the next hour and very gentle on the throttle - but I made it with plenty to spare!

When the trip computer gets to 0 there is normally about 18lt left, BUT if you keep driving make sure you stay away from hills. There are a couple of other threads on this and people have reported doing this BUT going up hills can cause you to run out at the pickup point.

I'm assuming you can't use the 150ltrs in the tanks, & that there must be about 5ltrs or so that can't be used / sucked up?

Rob, yes that's been my experience - but note the warning about hill climbs from Steve...although I was on some modrate hills it might be asking for trouble if they become lengthy steep climbs such as through alpine areas.

Good to know as we head out west in a week or 2.... roughly litres when the fuel light comes on.... good to know to.

I'll be using the Scan gauge II as well as that's pretty accurate when it comes to fuel usage.

Does a new model Prado run out of fuel earlier facing downhill, or uphill? useful to know.

Yeah, definintely uphill. I went up a small but steep dirt ramp when I had the fuel light on and starved the engine. Luckily it started up again when I rolled back down to a flat surface
