EGR blanking plate to block off or restrict?

    Screw clamps 6nm.

    It's more the Injectors & fuel system that all needs to be torqued to spec.

      Try & stick with 1/4 drive on 10mm heads & smaller.
      3/8 drive for the rest of the job.
      Penrite copper anti seize helps bolts go in a bit easier & out next time
      I also use it to stick the 2 10mm nuts in socket, egr cooler to head to save dropping them.

      • Hi Rusty and ####,
        No I didn't remove the power steering pump bolts or remove the reservoir though now you say it seems obvious. I did wonder about that common rail plug but was fearful of breaking it so stay well away. I intend to clean out the EGR valve and surrounds when I have a bit more time. At least I have slowed down the decline for the moment.

          Generally no, on the highway 110 egr is partially open. The hill climb will keep it fairly closed.

          You want to stop the soot ASAP.

          From what I can see, the more Pcv moisture/oil the better, it seems to be washing them out.
          Could be wrong but seems to be a pattern.

            Having cleaned the EGR and manifold twice now first time at 150000 no catch can. The soot was like tar in the manifold. Second time after the injector fail and catch can the soot was more 'fluffy'. Recently cleaned just the EGR and soot was again fluffy. Seems the oil from the PCV solidifies the soot to a smooth tar like texture.
            Either way it is a bugger to clean. Now have the 7mm restrictor plate so time will tell.

              So even with a catch can the soot was still there?
              When it's dry & fluffy thats when it's more abrasive.
              I think thin tar is one of the better outcomes, like this

                Soot was still present with catch can with standard EGR. Was thicker than pre catch can but instead of thick tar was fluffy soot.
                Didn't take any pics (sorry) of the fluffy soot.

                Just had a look at the pics i took when the motor was out after running the catch can for 50000 km was thick tar, now with the new engine and the same catch can the soot was fluffy. Why different this time i don't know.

                • EGR Clean

                  Ok so I finally got around to that EGR clean.
                  Dirty, Dirty job did I say DIRTY.
                  First wear disposable surgical type gloves because this stuff goes everywhere.
                  Second tip when reassembling put all the bolts in loose first then tightening as some of the latter ones may not connect if your tighten too soon (yes much undoing).
                  Flexi head ratchet spanners are a blessing as is your socket flexi joint (knuckle).
                  I bought two cans of carby cleaner but only used one (totally).

                  I had carbon right down into the inlet manifold which I scraped and vacuumed out as best I could.
                  How do I best deal with this pull the whole inlet manifold out?

                      • Stripped mine down today (20000k's, 80/20 city/rural, no towing). I didn't get a chance to take photos, but probably fairly similar to Rusty62's photos. #### was spot on regards timing, just under 5 hours. Probably quicker for those that don't suffer from fat finger sindrome.

                          That's it! Even get yourself one of those white disposable suits
                          Yours was a pretty bad one. Generally it's limited to the back of the manifold.
                          I find by the end of your fingertips, not much left, maybe 1-2mm thick.
                          Not worth the extra work to pull manifold off usually. But hard to say from here.
                          Some get so carried away, they pull the head off & send that or a clean as well

                          • A few days of driving after all my cleaning and the car is defiantly more responsive in low acceleration. I have also notice a drop in fuel consumption I would estimate at this point (less than half a tank) somewhere around .25 to .5 a liter per hundred. Just feels more lively, the "Oh what a feeling" is returning.

                            • So for those that have installed the restrictor (7mm) plate. Did you find it to be "more lively" and/or better economy? Im trying to decide whether to do one or both once it comes out of warranty. 2010 GX 3.0TD.
