  • OK so I bit the bullet and fitted a EGR restrictor plate with a 7mm hole.
Absolute mongrel job! I could not get the plate to go in from underneath so I removed the thermostat housing so I could see what I was doing and put it in from the top. At least gravity is on your side doing it this way. Interestingly there is no thermostat in the housing? The water temp stays fairly constant so I guess its elsewhere!
First drive all is good feels a bit stronger could be a placebo effect.
    Cheers

The thermostate is on the other side near the alternator.
Did you remove the power steering pump bolts to allow for more room to place the plate?

really appreciate your input on this thread mate.
Can I quiz you about the one EGR thread running alongside this one, where Sbclover has removed the throttle plate, which you say is stopping the EGR draw. This sounds like a much easier mod than running clean air from the airbox.
would you recommend one way over the other?
any chance you might be able to fill in on what other function the throttle plate plays, if it can be removed without any other real issues it doesn't seem that important..
        No probs, happy to help.
The throttle plate is making the egr draw, that is the primary reason it's there.
The secondary reason is for a smooth shut down.
So your right, it's nt that important at all.

I have not removed a throttle plate yet, nor do I know anyone who has. When I write something here I take into account thousands of people are reading it & may act using the advice, or at least taking it on board, so I make sure it's right before I write
So I cannot categorically say it will work & you won't have any problems. However I'm very confident it will work. But you may have a bit of a rough shut down, not sure how bad. I don't think engine light either, but is possible.
I did attempt to remove a throttle plate so I could have it copied, so I can do some r&d & reverse engineer it.
Was thinking more of a modded plate rather than compleate removal.
But the screws were super tight, carboned in, I will need more time on this.

The 7mm bank plate works well but always looking for improvement.
If you wish to go ahead & remove it, give it a go & let us know how you go.
It's all reversible, unlike cutting, drilling etc egr coolers & air boxes. Nothing to see either

          Yes fun job hey.
As rusty says thermostat is on other side & no you don't want to change it, that's fun too.

The way to put a plate in properly is start fresh clean the egr as well not just throw a plate in.
It's about 5 hrs work & much more fun than you just had.
Remove power steering pump reservoir, & common rail plug (don't break it) they are often very tight. This allows more room, much easier if you have the egr assembly off.
You will notice more responsive on light accel.

          • Wish i had a dyno. (and a two post hoist that was on the list for fathers day).
Had the 7mm plate in for a couple of weeks and car feels better in low to mid revs and part throttle, but could be the placebo effect as well.
Interesting that when slowing down, changing back to 3rd or 2nd 2500rpm or so i am showing 2.5 -3.0 psi boost. Maybe it was the same before plate but i can't remember. Anyone who has not done the EGR mod and has a scangauge can you look to see what boost you have when slowing down please.

Hundreds of people with placebo affect

Boost does hang around a little, like a couple seconds longer.

Just take off the intake elbow (front) & have a look. But then it's hard to tell how at bad it is if you don't see others to compare to.

It's always hard to get motivated on ths job, like most p.i.t.a jobs

                  37,000k 2014 150 series.
                  Not bad?

                  But once it's off

I always like to start fresh. No point putting a plate in & not knowing how bad it is/was.

                  135,000 on a 150 series
                  Getting a bit filthy?

                  Then 208,000k

                  Bloody clean.

So you really have to check & clean.
                  Yes it's ridiculous.

Towing creates more load & egr may be more closed.
                      So it should be cleaner.

                      • I'll be doing mine in 2 weeks when I'm on leave. It will be interesting to see how much carbon is there after 20k. Is there any extra gaskets etc that I should be ordering before stripping things down? Also where is the best place to find the relevant torque settings?

You should be ok to re-use all the relevant gaskets.
The litte 10mm ones are 13nm. But I'm a bad boy, with experience, so I go by feel on egr stuff. The 12mm bolts & nuts, About 20nm.
                          Screw clamps 6nm.
The rest, you should be able to feel you way through.
It's more the Injectors & fuel system that all needs to be torqued to spec.

                              • Is a long hard highway run (110kmh for 10 hrs, followed by a 45 steep hill climb up the snowies, then another 10 hrs on the freeway enough to help clean out the EGR? I'm going to fit a catchcan, restrict or plate and clean the EGR once it is out of warranty, but would prefer to do it the old fashioned way until then.

                                Thoughts from experienced mechs?

                                Thanks.
