TimA, Mate that is good news I haven't been able to hook up my van as yet to give her try but I have noticed she tends to lug a bit more now at lower rev's but it certainly is much smoother in the changes and sharper (quicker) Cheers Foxy

Old thread but good info for anyone having surging issues.

We had the update applied at the 30k service and all appears good so far.
Of course the symtoms didn't present themselves when the mechanic took the car for the pre-service drive (bloody typical!).
I spoke to them later in the day and provided TNS63/11 which they applied and even the wife commented on how much nicer the car is to drive.

We are towing the camper trailer next weekend, so will see if there is any issues when under load.

I have the same issue by the sounds of it but every time I go for a service they look at me like an idiot. I had a service in January and made the same complaint, they obviously didn't do anything as it has done it since the service. Being a mechanic myself I've been trying to reproduce it but can't do it successfully. Mine is so random, taking off from stationary, rolling start, at 110 km/h on cruise control. It doesn't discriminate, just whenever it feels like it. Might try another dealer I think.

We did our trek through the south over the weekend (around 900km) and had no issues at all whilst fully loaded and towing. Happy to say that TNS 63/11 definatey fixes the surging issue - at least for us.

Sounds good, any change in the fuel consumption?. I reckon the las update I had done lost me kilometre per litre. Which dealer does your work and what are they like?.

No noticable change in fuel consuption but i must admit that i dont watch it like a hawk either.

We use New Town Toyota in Vic Park. They are great and almost get a 10 out of 10 on every service.
They take the time to ask about any problems and are more than happy to go for a drive before servicing.
We dont pay for a loan car (most times) and we get our car washed all for the capped price service.

Mine was updated the previous service and my fuel consumption around the 'burbs has gone from about 10-10.5 to 14.5 with only a slight increase when cruising.

Dealer says it tests fine and I must be driving harder or carrying too much weight. I have put on a couple of kilos but that is rediculous fuel increase.

As stated previously it holds lower gears longer particularly 4th, it won't change to 5th until 60km/hr period....

                    Hey Guys,

How many here with manuals experienced surging issues? Like a couple others have mentioned, happens to me normally when cruising 100-110 or trying to get back up to speed from say 80-90.

I was initially suspecting AFM or pedal sensor - will see if I can get City Toyota to apply any ECU updates and see if it fixes problem.

                    Cheers,
                    Kevin

We had this at 110kph in our 2011 GXL D4D manual, particularly noticeable with the cruise control on. Problem solved since the dealer applied ECU update. Don't monitor the fuel economy enough to comment on that.

Had ECU updated done at City Toyota on Friday on my 2012 Prado with 71000km on the clock, by all accounts update for up shift had been done but not down shift,
Since been done no more surging has been noticed, but have only driven 350km. Hopefully all fixed.
No change in fuel economy noticed so far.

The symptoms in the TNF exactly matched what I was experienced.

Surging/hesitation at around 40 km/hr and typically as it was changing gears (auto) from 3rd to 4th. I tried to record this but it was intermittent. I was very easy on the right foot in this situation.

Surging/hesitation at 100-110 km/hr. This happened frequently on my last trip. I was away for 3 weeks and fully loaded. On the open highway, if i put the foot down to maintain highway speed (due to wind, incline, etc) it would hesitate. Like a fuel blockage or starvation. Thought it was around the stage the ECO light was due to come on.

The description in the TNF mentioned both these speeds.

                          Tim.

I noticed similar surging in my 2010 manual diesel after fitting a steinbauer chip. Mentioned the TNF 52/12 to the local dealer and they updated my ECU.
Problem seems to have been resolved.
