  • Oil Leak

Our car went in for its 40000 service yesterday and this morning I found a puddle of oil on the garage floor. I had a bit of a look under the bonnet and found a pool of oil in the area where the oil filter is. I figured that the filter was leaking.
After speaking to the service manager I took the car back and they reckoned that the tech had forgotten to clean the oil out from the filter area after changing it. They cleaned it up and took the car for a drive and on return there seemed to be no oil in the area. Problem solved.....or so i thought.

I have just came back in from a drive to find that there is oil in the area again but not as much as before. On closer inspection there seems to be residue oil above the filter. Can anyone help with what is above the filter area and speculate on where the oil could be coming from? I will be taking it back tomorrow and would like to have some knowledge as ammunition.

Also the oil is quite dark is this normal for oil that has just been changed?

It's normal for the oil to assume a dark colour, this is not indicative of age. Check the filter is secure, a slight deposit is not unusual. Oil might be spilt near the filter location, and down the block and around the sump plug. Toyota dealers are pretty good at minimising spillage. A little is nothing to be worried about but a lot is. The filter location, angle, etc will always let some used oil escape capture. If you are unsure, give the oil filter and area south to and including the sump plug a good spray of degreaser/engine cleaner, etc and hose it out. You should not find any weepage or overflow of excessive oil.

Sounds like they stuffed the seal on the new filter (e.g. didn't put some oil on it before tightening it). Happened to me back at 40,000 as well, took it back, apology given, filter replaced and they even had a go at cleaning my garage floor (unsuccesfully but it's the thought that counts).
