Bad Diesel Fuel Economy

    But it raises a good question regarding the grade of fuel these days and what brand you go to. Lets hope filling up will not be a 'lucky dip' as to whether we lose 400km out of a tank...
    What ever they did and also using shell diesel for the last 2 fills has taken the fuel economy back to 1000kms per 130L of fuel. Given the gear on the car I am ok with that range on around town start stop driving, will see how it goes over the Christmas season traveling.

      Yes I did mean 13L/100km. Yes I have been putting the economy down to the amount of accessories. Will be looking at a chip of some sort in the near future as well as changing muffler with a more free flowing one.

        They are kidding aren't they. My 150 series(diesel) gets about the 1100-1200km's to 150Ltrs...with a few weight adding accessories.

          My long time average, according to the board computer is 8.9 l/100 km. just commuting to and from work with a mix of freeway an suburbia I get as low as 8.5 but for the last two tanks I struggle to get it below 9.5. That may not be a bad figure compared to some, but it puzzles me as to why after almost 60.000 km this happens. Stock standard car, but I did have new tyres fitted recently of the same size. Also, the last 4 or 5 refills I used Shell instead of the usual Caltex as the discounts via Coles were too good to ignore. Car drives fine. Any ideas? Thanks, Fred

            My old girl 2001 GXL diesel 3 litre - on freeway averages in the 8's per 100klm but admittedly I'm traveling at 80kph or 90kph around or just under 2000 rpm mark. I am sick of paying ridiculous fuel prices and am looking to convert my vehicle to waste vegetable oil (chip oil) going to convert my sub tank as WVO run a two tank system. Start on diesel when warm and viscous switch across to wvo. Have looked into German company that do it properly, will be filtering wvo to .5 microns as well as removing any water. Further will have separate filters etc so if any problems switch back over to diesel. You also shut down on diesel. Still doing more research, there is one fellow in a Hilux ute (same motor) that's done over 200k on wvo indicated .5 micron and storing oil in shade for month to separate water is key. Denso pump is similar to Bosch and can handle wvo, anyway will certainly reduce my costs. My other half's business can supply me about 20ltrs a week of good clean oil..... So should bring down my costs after initial outlay of system. Cheers

              We did a trip up north with camper in tow over the christmas hols and I got atrocious economy - 17 or 18L/100 I think. I just put it down to the fact that I was towing the camper with boat on top, sticking to around 110kph. Normal day to day driving I will get around 9.5 - 10L/100. Didn't even think about where the fuel came from. This trip I used shell coz as bruggie said, the fuel vouchers were too good to turn down (32c voucher). Every other fill I've used caltex premium diesel. I think I'll go back to using caltex..

                My Prado 150 diesel is lifted 60mm I have larger tyres, bull bar and full roof rake permanently fitted, drawer system ect and I get 1200kms around the City and I have done 180 000kms so for Toyota to quote 900kms is about is false.
                Mate of mine has a stock 150 diesel and they get 1400km to a full tank.

                  No point on the muffler. It's got a DPF that'll restrict it regardless. If you put a high flow muffler after that - won't do anything, despite what the sellers may say. It's like putting a 30micron filter after a 2 micron filter - but in reverse. Unless you delete the DPF - but then you're on your own in so many ways.

                  Before I sold it, I was told there was a high-flow DPF being produced by local mobs in Wagga and, from memory, in Perth. Don't know where that got to but I gave up hope...

                    Well I have noticed a strange thing that I am going through on my 150 right now. So a while ago changed the fuel provider only to see very poor mileage that seem to correct it self. Recently changed to Costco and again saw the same thing happen. It seems the engine or something in there does not like the change of fuel and will come back to normal after a couple of tanks. Not sure if anyone else has had this experience. It could be entirely due to bad fuel batch, but I am told that does 'not' happen much in metros but is more common in the remote areas!
