Penrite HPRdiesel 10 is fine. If you look at the datasheet, the specs appear to suggest it's more a 15w40 oil.

10w40 best oil to use???

Hello all,
just about any of the oils suggested above will be fine once the engine is warmed up. We have all been told that 90% of engine wear occurs while the engine is cold so we need an oil which is usable cold. When the oil is cold it is difficult to push through the filter and into the fine tolerances in the critical wearing bits of the engine. ie bearings and valve gear. If you have a thicker cold oil you will have a greater pressure drop across the filter and this may cause the bypass valve to open to save crushing the filter. Just when you need it most you will have unfiltered oil bypassing the filter and going straight to the bearings. A thinner oil, ie a 0w grade will flow easier when cold and get to where it is required quicker and easier.
I used 0w40 valvoline synthetic last change in my D4D 150 series and the engine is quieter on startup and seems fine everywhere else whilst driving. I have not decided on my oil change intervals yet but will probably stick with 10,000 km as recommended by Toyota. My diesel all wheel drive Mitsubishi ASX recommends 15,000km between changes so the oils are obviously able to go beyond 10,000km easily before the additives are depleted beyond useful levels.
I kept to a standard Toyota filter but will continue to search for filtering data, both micron ratings and Beta efficacy, before I change from the Toyota unit also. I am tempted to use a Ryco Z131A as it is double the filter area and would therefore outlast a Toyota standard filter. When I find the data I will decide this issue. I have a Z131A on my tractor so one filter for both engines seems reasonable to me.
If anyone knows where to find the micron and Beta figures for the Toyota and Ryco filters I would love to know. From what I have read it seems that filters filter better as they get dirty and are at their best just before they open the bypass valve, changing them early may well be a backward step as you are going from a dirty but efficant filter to a new less efficant one. Once again the Mitsi recommends 15,000 km on a filter so perhaps this is better for the Prado also.
I have a habit of over researching technical issues and the lack of detailed test data drives me nuts.
regards
Ross

dealers swap n change what oil they use every 6 months
a mate of mine is a service advisor at Toyota and they don't use specific diesel oil they use a multi use petrol/diesel oil either castrol or caltex depends who gives them the best price
i personally use amsoil 10w/40 full synthetic diesel oil

I use this oil: http://www.penriteoil.com.au/product...id_products=13 changed every 5,000klm along with a Ryco Z418 filter. Have done for the last 40,000klm.
When I purchased the car S/H it was still under warranty so I reluctantly let Toyota do the last service for the warranty period. It felt terrible straight away. After 5,000klm when I changed to the Penrite oil, it felt much, much smoother.

Hi !
What year did Toyota introduce particulate filter?
I was hoping to use same spec oil for both my diesels
other one being a 2011 fiesta turbo
the 10 litre Penrite size would be perfect
I had a Pootrol before this and changed every 5000kms
the old saying says " Oil is cheaper than metal "
Stage IV emissions is where DPFs kick in, found a Ford site that gives you info from VIN number.
Probs best way to check Prado tooLast edited by spikegorman; 16-07-2014, 04:35 AM.

G'day, I have a 09/2011 150 - no particulate filter yet. By the way, I've gone round and round in circles trying to decide on the right oil and have ended up back at what my mechanic is using - Gulf Western semi-synthetic 10W-40 SYN- X 3000 and he adds additives. It seems like a good oil for the vehicle at a very reasonable price.
