  • 1KD Boost

How much boost does the 1KD run? I put my Scan Gauge in last night and noticed at idle the boost sits at -3.3 and under full load it maxes out at about 9.8. This is in a 09 GXL Auto 150 if that makes any difference. I have the scan gauge on BST and set to PSI. I was suprised to see it running in a vacuum at idle., is this correct?

I notice you have a hard time getting a reply.

14.5psi at sea level. above sea level the turbocharging pressure lowers due to a reduction in atmospheric pressure.
Scan gauge are good as a guide, that's all.
Some specs are exact, but some vary & are not accurate.
You may need to calibrate it.

Thanks ####. I will be getting boost and EGT gauges in the near future and I am sure it will give me a more accurate figure. I am not so much concerned about how much boost it does run, more so that mine is running properly. As far as I know, the Scan Gauge just displays the value the ECU is reading, in which case it would appear the ECU is getting a bad signal from the MAP sensor.

The reason I ask is I seem to be getting very poor fuel economy from my truck. I understand the factory fuel consumption display is less than accurate but it is showing an average of 11.4L per hundred at the moment (have gone through just over half a tank) which seems quite excessive, even for an auto with a winch and bullbar.

Depends what you have been getting & what sort of driving, but 11.4 is not too bad.
Have you cleaned the map filter? Maf sensor as well? Air filter clean?

The factory fuel consumption is consistently more accurate than the scan gauge.
        The scan gauge is generic,
Some things are displayed from the ecu eg; coolant temp, but others are calculated using its own formula from combined readings, eg; fuel economy.
I'm not an expert on scan gauges, but that's my experience.

The scan gauge can be adjusted to read 0 at sea level at idle. Can't remember the proceedure but it is the book some ware.
Interesting that our scangauge reads 11-12 psi max but the Techstream reads 1 bar (14) psi. Other than mounting a separate boost gauge the scangauge will let you see if anything changes over time.

Ended up getting it sorted. Turned the car on with out starting it today and it has zeroed the boos gauge. Seems to be reading right now.

              Hi,
I have a 2013 (My14) Auto Prado, with 80K on it. I recently fitted a scan gauge and get very similar readings for BST as the original poster.

I contacted Scangauge and they said this was normal, but i am not so sure.

I have looked for the articles/parts of the manual on adjusting the scangauge, but they no longer exist. Scangauge themselves said to me that there is no adjustment.

I note that the Original Poster's just "fixed itself" after a day or two.

I have also seen the comments about the MAP sensor and MAP filter possibly affecting the BST reading and was wondering if the negative BST reading is an indication that the MAP filter needs cleaning/replacing.

I assume that the MY14 Prado has one, but am not too sure where to look as I am not overly familiar with modern diesel engines.

              So the questions are,
              a) Is the BST reading from around -3.3 to +9.8 sound normal ?
              b) Do I need to check and potentially clean the MAP filter, If so, where is it located on the MY14 engine?

              Cheers,
              Mal

I've had a ScanGauge on my 2011 Prado for years and the BST reading was always around 0psi at idle. It has started displaying -3psi at idle and the maximum boost reading has had a corresponding drop.

On a recent trip I had a problem with the speed sensor on the left rear wheel causing an intermittent problem with many flashing dash lights on engine start. I took it to Toyota in Port Macquarie to get it fixed or at least find out if it was safe to drive the 1800km to home. After that was the first time I noticed the -3psi at idle so I'm assuming something got reset or corrupted when Toyota unplugged the ScanGauge or plugged it back in. Am going outside now to see if Dominator's solution works for me.

Turned the ignition on. ScanGauge display remained blank. Pressed the Home button and BST was displayed as 0.0. Started the engine and BST was -0.1 at idle. Sorted. Thanks
