  • Tail Shaft grease and propeller lubrication.

    Hi, I have a manual diesel GX 150 series and was under the car today doing stuff and noticed the grease nipples on the tail shaft. Does anyone know what grease should be used for this job?

    Can someone tell me what the propeller shaft is too, apparently I need to lubricate this and don't know where it is or what I should lubricate it with.

    Thanks in advance, hope I'm not being too annoying, so far everyone has been really polite which is great.

    Any grease that complies with the NLGI 2 spec.
    As far as i know, Toyota recommends lithium based grease for the U-Joints and moly enhanced grease for the sliding joints.

    Oh and to lubricate the joints you need a grease gun to pump in the grease through the nipples. For the U-Joints you need to pump in grease until you see just a slight amount of the old grease flowing out of the joints and for the sliding joints you just pump in 4-5 times and call it a day.

      Hi, exactly as Toyo said, some weeks ago posted about this, because car started the annoying clunck, bought molybdenum dysulphide grease for tail shaft, even manual states that NGL-2 would work, I'll prefer to be safe with the best, so I bought the correct grease, because most shops use generic ones that cannot hold well the pressure generated on the drive shaft and would started the clunck again after few kms. Five weeks since job and everything is perfect. For the tailshaft just give a few pumps, if its completely filled with grease, its said that will cause problmes withs seals because there is no free space inside, and grease will blow them. More isn't better here.

        Oh forgot to say that Toyota recommends moly enhanced grease only in the sliding joint but people have used it in the U-Joints with no issues. It's up to you. Hahahaha

            Toyota Uni Joint (Spider) and Slide Yoke Grease Points
            6 grease nipples altogether
            Toyota owner manual states a lithium base NLGI 2 grease in Spiders (uni joints) and only molybdenum type or Lithium in Slide yoke.

            These photos are from an old post and I think off a 120 but we get the general idea, perhaps someone could confirm 6 grease nipples please.

              Yeah that's all 6 of them. You also need to put a blob of grease on the front steering stops. These will be on the front side of the hub towards the bottom. Wipe the old grease off, put a blob of moly grease in the centre of the stop and spread a little.

                I believe that the 120 and 150 use the same drivetrain so it should be the same. In fact, they only changed the body and reinforced the frame, everything else is carry over. Its basically an 120 updated.

                  Only six nipples to grease. I grease mine every 5000k thereabouts otherwise I get the occasional nudge just like to 150 series tail shaft issue.

                  Just did the job today.

                    Just raising an old thread here for advice. I have a 2010 GX that I've just done a service on (my first self service on this car). I managed to lubricate the sliding joints without issue, however I wasn't able to readily access the U joint nipples on 2 of the joints due to there being not enough space between the U and the other side of the joint with the nipple on it.

                    Any advice on gaining better access? I had the vehicle front up on ramps, but that's not readily going to 'open' the joint up enough to get the tip of my grease gun onto the nipple.

                      This has been an issue forever, even on old series Cruisers. Might have to grind the end of your adaptor until she fits unless you can source a slimline job.
                      On my 90 there's an insane double joint at the upper end of the rear shaft that has 3-nipples. Only way I can grease it's centre nipple is to unbolt the joint from the box. Heaps of owners don't even realise there's a nipple buried inside.

                        I normally grease 7 nipples on the 90 that I have known about and are visible & easily accessible. With this hidden zerk fitting does that make 8 in total?

                          When greasing the uni joints, I have the wheels off the ground and in neutral. I then rotate the wheels until I can get the coupler on the nipple. I now use a quick release coupler because with the normal coupler, it was a bit difficult getting the coupler to release.

                            The double close coupled uni joint at the top of the rear shaft has 3-nipples, one for each uni and one down the centre.
                            I've replaced my universals with Hardy Spicer which have the nipple on the end of one cup. Makes greasing a breeze but that centre one up top still causes me grief.

                              bumping up an old thread can Penrite High Temp Bearing Grease be used for tail shaft and Uni joints?
