  • Cruising range decreasing each fill

    Hi all,

I've had my diesel 150 GXL for just over 2 years, awesome car, but I've noticed after each refill that the cruising range is slowly decreasing. It used to display 1150-1200kms after each fill, now I'm lucky for it to say 990, and that is filled to the brim?

Any idea why the slow decrease on each fill now?

Vapour lock while filling up perhaps?

Thanks vido. How do you determine if it is the vapor lock, and how do I stop this?

Do a search via Google with "site: pradopoint.com" tacked on the end. I don't own a diesel so have not experienced it myself but have read about it on here. I don't think it's likely on every fill though.

Did you record the distance and amount of diesel at each fill up?

I've had my GXL for just over 2 years too (from new) and mine almost religiously tells me I have a cruising range of 1234 km.

Wild guess, not even sure if its possible, but if you've been a little less fuel efficient, the computer may know this and change the range to match you recent fuel usage trend???

I'm hoping that now I have put the Prado onto a lease, I'll be able to track fuel usage a bit better - odometer reading required with every refuel.

Might be an idea to reset all the fuel and trip figures to zero including the avg lts per 100

I do this and when i fill up it shows 1190 to 1220 after a few kms of gentle driving ( its a 2009 auto with 150000 on the clock)

hope your using quality diesel ,Bp ultimate , is the best cetane 50- 54 some of the cheap stuff is only 46 So that could be 10% off your range

if you drive like you stole it the average will show higher and the forecast range will drop alot

I think I worked mine out
The cruising range is an average since new of what you have achieved
Mine usually around 1280 after a fill
After I did a trip of 10000k with a van it went down to 1100 and now after 12 months has slowing crept back to around 1200k

I'm guessing too, but I think it works it out from your average l/100km reading. If you reset that it will reset the distance to empty also.???

Thanks all! I think snapper is right.
I love in Broome and it's such a small town the car only averages 31kms/hr on the trip computer, fill up every 7-8 weeks, hence it may have adjusted to the short trips.

I do average about 13.5L/100k, not heavy footed or loaded up just mostly short trips. I know this is thirsty but if I only do short trips its to be expected I guess

                      150L
                      --------------- x 100km
                      13.5L/100km

gives you a calculated range of: 1111km

Good app for your phone is FuelLog....been using it for years now. Keeps track of consumption and other running costs (if you want to input them). You can have it track multiple cars as well.

A update, still the last 2 fills I got 990 and 1004 cruising range!

But...I replaced my main battery today and noticed that the computer has reset and now reads 1240 cruising range! My guess after approx 3 years of short trip the computer has averaged out my average fuel consumption.

                          Anyone else had this issue?

First of all, thanks for sharing what you do in Broome.

I get really annoyed when my diesel usage exceeds 11 l/100k in Melbourne where I spend more time stopped at the lights than moving and it is all very short start/stop driving in horrible congestion.

I've never averaged anything like 13L/100k even towing the camper in the shocking excuse for a road up around Dalhousie Mt Dare and Finke.
