  • Smoking bad when decelerating and oil now low.

    So, one hour into a trip from Perth to Melbourne and I'm siting outside the Northam Toyota dealer waiting for them to open. Car's done 7500 km, I notice lots of smoke whenever I backed off the throttle. Grey smoke. Oil light comes on. I hit the brakes, loud backfire. Check dipstick and it's at the very bottom. So it's gone from full to below add in 100km. Restarted engine, no oil light so drove 20 km to dealer. It was not hot and is no missing or rattling or losing power. Bugger!

    Not good at all. That's going to mess up your plans, sorry to hear.
    Unusual problem I think, please let us know how you go.
    What were your plans? Just a holiday? Or moving?

      Update: Dealer didn't bother to open at the advertised 0900, and the "toyota Technician" from the call out was a tow truck driver (didnt even look at the motor), who said he was authorised to tow it to the local dealer, where I was parked at. FFS?. Anyway, it was running smoothly, so I got some 5w/30 from a nearby station, topped it up about 1200ml and drove on, after about 20 mins it starts the smoking, so top up the oil, abort the mission and start heading back to Perth. Every 20 mins I'd stop and top it up, but in the end decided this is silly and got a truck to take me home where i unloaded the car and booked him to dump it at local Toyota next week.
      Back of the car is covered in black oil stains, end of exhaust tip is oily as is the inside. Wonder if a turbo seal's gone?
      Trip wise its a disaster, we were going to spend a week going to Vic, one week there watching the Grand Final, catching up with family etc, then one week coming home via great ocean road.
      Now we're paying more to fly Jetstar to Melbourne than we would Qantas to go to LA??!! But hey, Sh!t happens, can't blame anyone and life's too short to sulk. Will post on the results one the Toyota people have a gander.
      As a side note, amazed at the incredible amount of east bound traffic I came across as I retreated westwards. Like some sort of mass migration. Go Eagles

        I'm sure we'll all be listening with great interest about how Toyota tackles this one.
        Sorry to hear of your experience, sounded like a great trip you were about to embark on!

              Update: can't find any fault b with engine. Given their records show I provided oil (Penriite hpr 5w 40) they are going down that path replacing filter and oil and I then need to do 2000 km to determine if that's the fix. I'll report the developments as they occur.

                Update: Left car with dealer while we flew to Melbourne to watch WCE get a footy lesson. Got back last night and picked car up from dealer. I then drove it 210km up and down the freeway at various speeds and a few floggings up to 125kmh and she's fine. It no longer had the faint burnt oil smell that it has had since I first started using the Penrite.

                What did the dealer do;
                1 - Replaced oil with 10w30 Magnatec prof.
                2 - replaced oil filter
                3 - drove about a few days then replaced the oil again
                4 - checked injectors, injector seats etc, oil pressure, compression, everything fine.

                So in this case the culprit was me, having used Penrite HPR Diesel 5 - 5w40 semi synthetic since the car was 3 moths old and 2,500 km. changed again at 6 months (I supplied it to dealer) and again at 9 months, being 3 days before heading towards Melbourne.

                Car's on a oil consumption test and I'll post the results when it's done the 2000 km test, or earlier if anything occurs.

                  Interesting read. We use Penrite HPR Diesel 10-40 and have used the 5-40 and the Enviro+ 5-40 full synthetic oils.
                  Never had any oil consumption or smoke issues. On our old 80 series used Penrite and no issues and when pulled down no sludge.

                  Something doesn't sound right here.

                    Update - Drove it another 330km today, after washing all the black oil stains off of the tailgate etc (had to use kero);
                    1 - parked it overnight in driveway nose down a bit. Got Mrs to start and no smoke.
                    2 - drove it over the same route as the failure occurred, from Perth up the darling escapement to Meckering, well beyond the point where it drank all it's oil the other week.
                    3 - huge amount of westbound returnees so I took a hillier route home via Goomalling and Toodyay.
                    4 - so, after another 330km (540km since obtained back from dealer) and continuous running for 4.5 hours there's;
                    a) no observable smoke when on the road, when at full throttle, decelerating or light throttle. None observed at all.
                    b) no smoke when stopped and idling.

                    So this little black duck's going to stick with the 10w-30.....

                      Cant believe a simple change in oil brand can cause something like that. I have a feeling it was not the oil but we will never know.
                      Glad to hear that it's all fine now.

                        My dealer City Toyota use Delvac 15w-40.
                        When I first started doing my own service I used Penrite 5w-40 but my mechanic mate who services a lot of Prado's said in W.A. stick to Penrite 15w-50 especially in the summer months, so I have.
                        Last month I changed to Penrite 10w-40 heading off to the cold in Victoria,(why I don't know because haven't done it in the past) now back home back to Penrite 15w-50.
                        I was informed by the local Toyota dealer that they warrant using anything up to 20w-60 and that 5w-30 oils are only needed for extreme cold climates not experienced in Australia.

                          It pretty hard to believe that difference of 5w would cause that much oil consumption.

                            I doubt it was the oil.
                            As has been said, we will never know.
                            Limo guy good choice of oils & for the 2 climate changes. Those are the 2 I use. I have customers who use 5-30 & 40, no problem either.
                            10w 40 in cold & winter.
                            15w 50 otherwise & everyone up north.

                              As an ex oil company employee whom worked in Lubes for many years i would bet it wasnt the oil caused the issue. Would have loved to have been able to open the bonnet after they did 'whatever' it is they did. My money on it being turbo related

                              My Prado 150 TD ran on 10w40 semi synthetic for nigh on 200k without ever using a drop ...
