Im expecting a LOT for an almost 15 years of improvements.
Sadly we dont get the 1GD-FTV here. At least not now, they are still selling the NEW Hilux and 2016 Prado with the 1KD AFAIK.
    Why update if its working.
    I would still prefer 3.0L over 2.8L.
only time I would call it update is when engine size stay same or increased.
    downsizing isn't upgrade. its downgrade.
6 speed on 2.8 isn't great for towing either. Instead of having tighter gear ratio and have 1 over drive gear.
It has 2 overdrive gears, purely for fuel saving on city use. Idc what anybody says, towing in overdrive is never good thing.
If you want quite engine, buy petrol. Don't buy diesel if you so concerned about NVH.

The discussion and reports and reviews elsewhere about the new "Global Diesel" equipped Prado seem to focus and highlight the quietness and smoothness of the new diesel. Honestly, I have a 2010 D4D Prado, and I have changed the oil and oil filter every 5,000km, and have now done over 210,000km and it still runs nicely, its not noisy, I find it quiet enough...so a quieter diesel is not a specific selling point for me. Unfortunately the new Prado still has 2,500kg towing capacity. We tow a camper trailer, a large boat and sometimes a caravan, and its been a great car and towing 2,499kg has been no problem. But soon the 5 year lease is up on our current Prado, and it is time to start looking, and I'm so happy with the Prado, that I'm inclined to lean that way...but..I understand the same engine is in the new Hilux, the Fortuner (I think?) and the Prado, so I am thinking of looking at and comparing all three over the next couple of months.

Diesel fuel tank capacity has been really useful to me, so I would miss not having a 150 liter capacity. Neither the hilux or Furtuner have large fuel tanks. I think the 6 speed auto will be good for highway travel, but when you tow any weight in the current Prado you should move the auto into 4th gear (ie avoid overdrive), so I guess that will be the same on the new vehicles I guess. I hear the new engine has a timing chain, so that's good news not to have to replace the timing belt at 150,000km. I also imagine the new engine will have a DPF..so I guess that means using a more expensive engine oil that is DPF compatible?
I am thinking that perhaps a Fortuner optioned up with an aftermarket bull bar, 40mm suspension lift, snorkel, tow bar...and I might possibly come in under the base price for an un-optioned 2016 Diesel Prado GXL Auto...but I'm not even sure if aftermarket accessories are available for the Fortuner. I wonder if the rear seats in the Fortuner can be temporarily removed easily...of interest the rear door on the Fortuner opens upwards...anyway, its food for thought...but a quieter, slightly smaller capacity diesel engine might not be such a big selling point, but slightly more fuel efficient, and less expensive servicing could be attractive.

I'm noticing 12.4 average, but i'm only 500km through the tank (that was full at pickup!) and that has been 90% stop start city crap. Have a good run down the coast planned next week so will be interesting to see how it goes.

If 10.9 is accurate then its about 1.5 to 2 better than the 3ltr for city driving

Is there some way of displaying the average fuel economy on the new 2.8L GXL?

The economy graph for the last 30 minutes is all very interesting but it doesn't give me an average.

The fuel economy (amongst other things) is displayed where the odometer is on the instrument cluster. There is a small button below your dash light brightness adjustment knob, press to toggle through menu.

Thanks Dave. Never noticed that button before. From where I sit it is completely hidden by the indicator stalk.

I'm averaging 12.0L/100km. All city driving. To be honest I'm used to driving something with a slightly better power to weight ratio, so I'm probably being a little heavy with the right foot.

edit: Just remembered. That includes about 50km towing my boat.

Is the dreaded 80kmh/ 1500rpm drone gone?

My experience with my Prado (3.0 litre) is that the dash fuel consumption gauge is not very accurate. It can be higher or lower than actual consumption and there is no consistency. As a result I don't pay any attention to it and so I'd recommend that you don't worry about what figures it's showing - calculate your consumption when you refill the tank and then worry about whether it's higher than you were expecting once you've done that.

I've found mine (Stock 3.0L Kaka) is consistent but not in a good way. I tend to only completely fill up and really only when the fuel comes on as I know there is plenty of fuel left. Normally the car takes around 130 litres and my trip computer odometer normally says I've done around 1100-1150km (over 11L/100km) for that tank yet my trip computer average is around 10.0 - a little low. I know the car's odometer is pretty spot on (less than 1% error) however the trip computer fuel consumption error is over 10% which is not good. It would be nice if the error was in my favour but it is not. I have found a similar issue with my work 150 Prado (manual) too.
