  • Prado 150 2015 Looking at Being Chipped

Can anyone advise me is it worth getting my new Prado 2015 VX chipped for a couple of reasons.

First, is to hopefully reduce the horrid engine noise at 1500 rpm. Have tried lots of modifications but to no avail and Toyota dont give a dam. Last time ever I ever buy a Toyota. Would it being chipped have any bearing on reducing this noise?

Also we will be towing a caravan and would like the extra power and better fuel consumption.

Just a word of warning to others who are considering buying the Toyota Prado.....if you want a quieter vehicle look at other makes and models. I made the big mistake and hate Toyota for the lack of assistance in helping to solve the problem. They dont care!

A Toyota enthusiast (WAS) for the last 40 years.

Do yourself a favour and google 150 prado vibration drone

Plenty of pradopoint links on things to check - snorkel will help but their are also issue with the plumbing from the air tract through the guard.

Software update fixed my 1500rpm issues....as suggested above heaps of info on this forum about it. On the chipping question I think lots of people on here would not recommend you do it particularly for towing due to the increased chances of engine failure.

Have a read on the attached link.

If you intend to tow you could be looking at adding to the thread.

The vibration at 1500 rpm can be easily fixed. Try this.

Have done the fix on brothers 150 sucessfully. (Nifty07).page 2

In my view the D4D motor is highly strung enough without pushing it further.

Can't agree with that in the slightest. Have a look at what the euro diesels are putting out and what they're reving to. Also have a look at what the tuning scene is doing with the D4D in Thailand.

Toyota aren't known for pushing the limits of their engineering in any capacity and I really don't beleive they are here either.

              Drift,

I gained that impression from the article in the latest Overlander Mag. It stated that the injector failures were more common in the Prado than the Hilux, and that the 200 series is even more reliable. They put it down to the amount of tune they are getting out of the motor. The Hilux is detuned compared with the Prado, and the 200 series is pushing the limits even less.

I am happy to be convinced otherwise, but after my experience I won't be adding any chips in the near future.

You would expect the V8 to have twice the failures if pushing the motor had nothing to do with the problem.

When your chipped D4D engine injectors start to fail and they will the extra power from raised rail pressure will leak past the injector, overheat the piston, crack it and eventually put a hole in it. The pistons are not designed for the extra fuel.
We have had 2 D4D motors have the same failure in our family when towing. Thus my comments above.

A lot of other manufacturers are getting the higher power figures, look at the 6 cyd diesel BMW make.

Chip if you like but I had removed mine and sold it after it killed my engine.

Might I suggest, before you chip it, have a look at
                  1. Snorkel $750 installed
                  2. Muffler $250 installed
                  3. If not happy there, exhaust. $750-1500

I have the first two and the difference is quite noticeable. Those stock mufflers are restrictive as hell. Power is more on-demand and smoother in delivery.

I underrstand You need the above to realise any gain in chipping anyway.

Just my 2cents: chipping doesn't appear to help longevity of the engine at all. Let the engine breathe properly to start with and see what you think.

I did snorkel + k&n filter. seems that droning is gone and rough vibration on idle with a/c on.
I was going to get exhaust for same reason but after fitting k&n filter today. not 100% sure if I'm ready to put $1000+ on car
