I'm tempted, and nearly at that point, but had good service up until this episode. I think they are a little understaffed at the moment. One more stuff up and I will name them.

The behaviour is exactly the same when you put petrol through it. Must be the pump.

My 2008 diesel did this 70km north of port Augusta with 12,000km on the clock. Not happy. After a few days in the PA dealership they "fixed" it but the problem was there til I sold it; it happened 2 more times. Wouldn't access the last 1/4 tank of fuel. Rear tank bone dry, 1/4 showing on the gauge and all of it was in the front tank. Weird. At least the 120 carried 180 litres so it was still fairly practical.

Just a quick update, new pump arrived at dealership but they are awaiting an "SST" tool to fit it! Fark! If it's not the pump, they said they will be scratching their heads and I said i'll be asking for a new car. Any tips or suggestions on how to go about this should it be needed?

Can they not apply power to the pump to see if it works?

Good luck, unfortunately Australia does not have "lemon" laws like the USA. I am not aware of many people obtaining a replacement new car as the dealership would be stuck with your original car as I don't believe they actually own it in the first instance (someone can elaborate here if they know the way dealers work with Toyota Australia regarding new cars).

Here is an old (2011) article that may be of help:

Pathetic really. Once upon a time they built cars to do 1 million km's. the old man's HR did exactly that. Diesel's were sound and reliable. Now the common rail is a common problem.

I know a fellow that recently purchased a brand new Triton and after 2 days and only 175 km the engine decided it had done enough work and gave up, he had it towed to the dealership and they offered to fix it but he told them he wanted a new one and the stepped up and replaced it fully with a new replacement vehicle and he hasn't had a problem since. I think everyone is entitled to have a bad day, but they should be prepared to replace it with a new one. After all it's $60k+. I think he threatened the dealer with media exposure. Toyota wouldn't want that.

A friend recently ordered a Kluger that died after 40km and had to be towed back to the dealership. All of a sudden it came back to life, then died the following day and again was towed to dealership, and the dealership couldn't locate the issue. My mate complained like buggery and had a brand new car 2 weeks later. If you make enough noise, and I guess if they cant diagnose and remedy the vehicle, then they will provide a brand new one.

Australia does not have a "lemon" law, however Australian Consumer Law entitles the consumer to replacement in the event of a "major" fault.

If they cannot locate or fix the fault, I would say it is pretty f*cking major !!!

Put aside the very real "lemon law" issues for the moment, what I find particularly disturbing is that there is a new $60+ vehicle that no longer runs and the dealer does not seem to know why, with the result that after 8 days it is still not going.

If cars are so complicated these days that even dealers can't fix, then perhaps it would be prudent in trying to keep the older good ones going.

I bought a VW in the mid 2000's. It died after 17km. I was driving around a downhill left hand corner and the engine just stopped. Some sort of major engine problem, no-one could/would tell me what it was. It would crank, but would not run. The dealer took it back, shipped it back to Germany and got me another new one. I didn't have to ask, that's just what happened.
