Well today our gxl went in for its for free service well thought it was a service turns out only a check up. So my question is what have others had done for theres i would have thought been a new engine that thay would at least change the engine oil but no.

Same as 90, 120 and 150. They only check for leaks and other minor issues at the "free" check up. Whens the first oil drop - 10,000km?Dave

Never changed the oil in any of my cars including dozens of hiluxs and Navara diesels. Never had an issue.
In fact many of them have missed services for up to 30,000km especially when the get in to the 300k range as the drivers just fail to check.
No problems what so ever. And in fact MIT conducted research into degradation of oil and found it only lost 20% of the lubrication after 30,000km so most manufacturers are just cashing in on regular services.
Ever wonder how a Disco or Navara is now on a 20,000km interval magically?

My missus had an old Hyundai Exel which could could years without an oil change simply because every week we would top it up with fresh oil!Dave

The only extra oil change I ever do on my cars is at around 1500km. It is old school from days when engine tolerances weren't as good, however it ensures that any debris from engine assembly or from initial bedding in of components gets taken out of the system. I paid the extra to get my oil changed at 1500km.[B]Steve[/B]

I think with a new engine oil and filter should be done maybe 1500 to 2000 kms to remove any derbries and bedding in material
The 5 or 10000 preference should be up to the individual and based on climate and driving style and types of journey done
Landrover and jaguar quote 16000 petrol and 26000 for diesel or 12 months maximum before an oil change
You can't over service an engine - there is nothing better than clean oil but you don't want to waste oil and money
It's your car so you get to choose and it also depends if you change vehicle every 2-3 years or 10 years

It also affects resale IMO.....every car I own gets a 5k oil and filter replacement and every time I sell the car I get better resale value. Often I get asked asked I change the oil every 5k.
I also have an old hilux with the 2.8D engine and if you check the forums you will find that you run the risk of doing the big end bearings (eventually) if you don't change the oil at 5k intervals. So different cars may require different treatment. Based on what I have read here the 3.0lt D4D engine definitely benefits from a 5k change particularly if you don't have the EGR blanking plateand/or catch can.2010 150 Glacier White GXL D4D AutoComment

Could not agree more, I'm a Diesel fitter and rebuild Cat mining engines when we strip them down you can tell if they have had regular service by the shit build up on the internals. For those of you who have diesels:
it is true that oil additive packages can last a lot longer than the specified service intervals in both diesel and petrol engines, but in diesels the limiting factor is almost invariably the ability of the additives to keep the soot in suspension. The problem is that once the oil is holding and/or dispersing all the soot it is able to, any additional soot clumps together and forms what is basically a carbon grinding paste which lodges in the surfaces of the metal parts (bearings, cylinder walls) and proceeds to destroy your engine. It may take a while, and all may seem OK, but it IS HAPPENING! This soot, even when clumping, is usually too fine to be filtered out by normal means: it can only be removed by oil change! I have done oil testing on DELO400 at 5k, 10k and 15k intervals and all the parameters were like new oil: EXCEPT the soot loading!!! , which extrapolated out to a life of 20k in my particular 1KZ-TE doing highway miles.
The message: If you want to maximize the oil life (and mining/transport do it regularly) then analyze the oil and work out when it is worn out, or (the easiest, safest option) just follow the recommended schedule.
Of course, if you hate your Prado and don't give a rats, just drive it until it dies, or until you can palm it off to some other poor sod!

Here the first oil change is done at 1,000km as per the maintenance manual.Comment

The Prado comes with 3yr warranty and you can get 2 aftercare (5 years total)
If you follow the service manual and you have any problems im sure its covered in the warranty if its attributed to old oil.
With all the tolerances built into the car im sure the 6 month or 10k/km limits they put on the changes is well in spec to protect the engine.
If it wasn't they would have a lot of problems on their hands with cars dying all over the place form not getting 5k/km oil changes.
