  • 2.8 GD Economy - First Camping Trip

    Hi All

Just thought I would give some feedback regarding my recent camping trip and the economy of the new 2.8. After 2600km with 95% of that towing a fully load Jayco Flamingo weighing around 1400kg I averaged 13.1 liters per hundred and averaged around 106km hour. Had around 10km beach driving, plus around 100km without the trailer at 110 km an hour. Having come from a 120 series V6, I basically matched the around town figures of the old V6 except was dragging a camper around WA. Pretty happy with the 2.8.
    Cheers
    Dave

    averaged around 106km hour
Notice you are from WA and the law for towing in WA is ????? max 100kph
To get an average of 106kph hate to think what you may have topped out at given you should have obeyed speed limits in towns etc
A lower average would have resulted in much better economy Sorry cant put much faith in your post

for comparison I tow 1.8t van and over 10000k mainly through NT and WA averaged speed 84kph for and average over the 10k at 13.9l per hundred (3ltre engine)

best I have ever got recently from Adelaide to Whyalla 11.3l per hundred towing same van

Gday Snapper. I sat with the Analogue speedo showing 106 on Cruise, old faithful iPhone GPS showed 101. Also didn't have any too many towns to speak of to drive through. My trailer is a pop top so may have had less resistance than yours, and no racks etc.

Great to see some info starting to flow re: the 2.8

but sitting cruise control on 106kmph does not in any way mean you achieved an average anywhere near that - more than likely you total average speed for the trip was in the mid 80 bracket as well. how many kilometers did you travel and how long did it take to travel those kilometers excluding breaks ?

And good old Prado speedo is still generous by 6km/hr.

Intersting we did 1600k and probably only 50% with camper trailer on but did have rhino platform on and a plastic case on top but the avg from before we left to when we got home was 13.7 did this by resetting the avg reading.
Is yours auto ? If so what did you think of the six speed
Im not happy with it at all towing at 115kph it would keep changing between 5th and 4th every 15sec unless i looked it to 4th .
And at 110 it would not even go into 6th on a down hill run also the temps were worrying pulling up a range in 3rd at 60kph it was impossible to keep it below 120c
Arb colour code deluxe bar, safari snorkel, lightforce venom HID's, GME uhf remote face, redarc tow pro, redarc bcdc 1240, pioneer platform, 40" curved light bar, dual battery, 3" SS exhaust, EGR mod, trans cooler upgrade, provent catch can, scangauge 2, diesel care secondary fuel filter, Tin's bash plates and actuator gaurd, 2in Bilstien and kings lift,

Gday GEEXL. Did 1200km in day non stop, apart from a few toilet stops on the side of the road. Otherwise a couple of days of 600 a day

Hi Hally. Yes mate, Auto. I had the gear box in S5 as 6 is so heavily overdriven I didn't want to stress the box towing in 6th, not that it would ever want to pick up 6th anyhow. Strangely if you sit on 100 in Drive when not towing mine usually stays in 5, but if you engage cruise it drops to 6th immediately.

Gidday Prado Dave. My 2.8 has done a round 1200kms now, same as you, come from 120 V6 which I owned for 10 years and 20,000 kms.
I was worried about diesel performance but so far am happy. The only weakness is acceleration from 70km/hr to say 110 for passing. The v6 was stronger in that range. But for general driving, the 2.8 is excellent. I am very happy with it. Will be towing the boat a couple of hundred kms at the end of the week so will get a feel for that then. Am planning to tow in S4 to avoid engaging overdrive 5th or 6th. Interested that you towed in S5. The technology leap from VX 120 to VX 2.8 150 is significant. Am enjoying the stereo and navigation in particular. Haven't looked at fuel consumption yet as thought I'd get it a bit more run in first.

Gday Joe, I was planning on sticking to 4th myself, but for the vast majority of the trip, the road was as flat as a pancake. I was happy to drop back to 4th anytime we came across an incline. Also, when I allowed the box to make its own decision, it would usually happy to sit in 5th on that flat, and again drop back into 4th.

Greetings from the UK, guys, I have a 3 litre diesel 150 and Toyota have now just started to shift the 6 speed auto 2.8 diesel in this market. Anyone swapped from the 3 litre to the 2.8 and if so is the engine much improved would you say, both in torque and smooth running?

New 2.8, steel bull bar, bash plates, steel side steps, full roof rack with surfboards, fully loaded car with 4 on board and a 1.2T camper.

                          Highway 11.8ltr. This was a 400km trip
Off road (as soon as I let the tyres down I reset the fuel meter) 25ltr. High I think because the sand is very soft.
After the off road I didn't reset the fuel. Towed home again 400km and the computer was saying 13.1ltr.

                          Pretty happy with that.

My 2.8 has about 5000 kms on it now

Been getting about 11-11.2 averages (have reset it a couple of times) regardless of load or usage
Haven't towed anything yet, heaviest load would be camping gear

I'd tends to get thrown out a bit by the fact that we live 4 km up a very steep road

Doing a 1000 k trip fully loaded with camping gear next weekend - I'll reset it before this trip and see how it goes

That is certainly higher then what I expected from the 2.8..
