  • 2.8 TD using alot of Oil.

Hi Everyone I've got a 2.8 TD Auto Kakadu. The oil use had been insane. Have low oil light coming on a bit. Done 45k kms now. Just went in for service and toyota have asked us to drive a 1000kms then bring back for oil level tests. Then do it again.

Just seeing if anyone else has experienced oil problems with the new 2.8td

    Cheers

    Slippery

That doesn't sound great mate.. I checked mine at 9k just before I took it in for its 10k service and it was still on the full mark..

You might want to put a catch can on it to see if it's blowby.

      Hi slippery,
I have had the same issue with my 2.8, oil light came on just before the 20,000km service, I had a catch can on mine and they made me take it off incase it was that causing the oil usage and have to take it back at 25,000 which isn't to long now so will let you know my outcome

        They don't sound too well.
Please let us know what they find.
        Goodluck!

How could the catch can be anything do to with it. If you didn't have a can it would be getting sucked back in and burnt anyway

Your guess is as good as mine, I argued the point, in the end I just took it off for the 5000kms to prove that it's not the catch can so we will see what happens

I checked mine this morning and its has not dropped since its 10k service currently have about 19k and I do have a catch can on mine.
Some service departments shit me they treat people like idiots and make things harder than should be hoping people don't bother

Did the catch can catch much when the engine was using oil?

                    Hi mattyr,

See my response under 2.8 dpf fail. Just before I sold at 27,000k my 2.8 appeared to start using a lot of oil ( roughly 1 litre) but as I was selling it I didn't check that closely, or report it, but after reading your comments I am sure you are having the same problem.

Hope yours is an easy fix!!

Yeah Righto cheers mate, mine was enough to make the low engine oil light come on, I took it straight to Toyota and that's when they started their oil checking business they do, straight off the bat they tried blaming the catch can though

Mine goes in next Monday for a 1000km check from service and then it will go again in another 1000km which is only a week after. Not sure what the issue is.

Engine Runs beautifully, economy good. Low oil level has come on a few times. Mainly on steep drive ways.

Fingers crossed all good. I was thinking that my 2.8td would be up there with one of the highest kms in the country ? We bought it as soon as the 2.8 was released in August last year and have done 47k kms now ! Some mining hiluxs would have to be up there or above too

My Prado has done almost 30,000km, and it doesn't use any detectable amount of oil between oil changes. Mine is almost 6 months old, and the oil stays at the same position on the dipstick. I was careful to 'run it in" somewhat, ie for the first 5,000km or so I didn't over-rev it, or overload it, I didn't tow with it or drive off road and carefully varied the speed so it didn't stay for periods of time at the same speed, ...I have noticed that the engine has "freed up" somewhat after about 20,000 km (as was the case with my previous 2010 150D4D Prado)...I do virtually always let the engine "cool down" after driving ...ie an idle down period which might be a gentle drive down the street after a highway run, and about a minute at idle before shut down, just to let things cool off in the engine....ie I don't come to a stop and just shut the engine off immediately wherever possible (this was mentioned in the 2010 Prado handbook, so its just habit).

                          anyway, hope it works out

I think you need to look in the user manual about this. I too had this happen when my nose was pointed down a steep decline and I had the engine idling for a little while. Its states in the manual that the engine low oil light can come on if you are parked on a steep decline.

                            Hope its simple

                            Thanks
