The ECU reflash v chip is a big debate
    Both have pros and cons

I would be happy with just a mild tune hopefully improve some fuel economy
And disable EGR also add catch can - purely for consistant performance

Unichip will probably have EGR disable add on eventually

I would highly recommend an ETG and boost gauge with both

I had a unichip on my 79 went well but was far from trouble free to there credit they sorted it out eventually but never would have been picked up with out my gauges

There's a lot of $$$$ in these Diesel engines

Now they have tuning up and going I'd imagin intake and exhaust upgrades will bring better fuel economy

What kind of issues did you have?

It was installed by an authorized dealer

        First
it would randomly not start on certain tunes

        Second
just off idle, say 100km/hr you would hit a bump in the road you would ever so slightly touch the peddle further down and hit max boost 21/22psi in about 1 second so fast and hard the engine would shudder

        Third
randomly loose engine for split second ( very rare like once a fortnight )

        Forth
        Lost all tunes

when it would start to play up i also noticed mare exhaust smoke far from excessive but usually there's none
every time it would go back there was another excuse ( wrong tuning mode ) - ( corrupt file ) - ( electric boost controller ) even got we dont know a few times

every time it would come back ok for a few weeks then surly it would start to play up again
the installer was starting to get annoyed as well

So i decided to go to unichip directly ( luckily there close to me )
they looked at the car and had it all sorted free of charge they never said what the issue was but it was a different 4wd the way it made and held boost was totaly different than before ET were slightly lower at hwy speed

unfortunately it did not end there
next was over boost off idle if you would put your foot to the floor it would hit about 26Psi before holding 20ish ( should be limited to 21 max )
and once when changing tunes it lost the engine for 3 seconds and threw an engine light

back again they put a 5 map selector on for free and sorted it all free - they never told me what the engine light fault was.

To there credit they did take it back free of charge and made time immediately to have it in
and when running well it was a dream to drive
loads of power down lo and up top pulled like a steam train just off idle very easy to drive on the road with any size tyres or load

with 33' tyres was averaging 12.5lt per 100 even when she had over 200k on the clock

For reliability & longevity, leave the engine as it is, other than reducing/removing egr soot.

            In a nut shell yes
But it's not to say the motor will not last your life of the Vehicle

I'm popping a catch can on very soon
( Tiapan Xp are a few weeks away from a kit )

And probably wait till the motor has 20 odd K on it and look for a remap with EGR delete
Will be simply asking for Mild tune to suit up sized exhaust and intake - hopefully get 15% on power and a little better cruising economy

You can either have a bluetooth module or a matchbox sized map switch.

I do run an EGT gauge but no boost gauge.

Also the Unichip has changed alot in the last year or so. Its now fully plug and play where as earlier versions needed a couple of hard wires.

I am not one bit associated with unichip nor am I a reseller of the product.

I know they are an add on chip for the 79 series so there is
2 injector drives, ECU chip and then EGR delete chip
Are you saying there Std chip set can turn the EGR Off on the 2.8 ?

I think if Toyota wanted the engine to produce 638Nm Torque they would of done it and engineered the drive train accordingly. i personally will never consider chipping an engine.
