  • My vehicle is back at my Dealer for a 4th time to get the manual DPF switch to work in "Customer Mode". Its been there all week thus far.

Has anyone out there had a DPF Button plus "Custom Mode" successfully installed in their 2018 (or earlier) Prado, (have you been able to press the button and start a burn?).
If so who was the service shop? I might give em a call.

    • Had my Prado Nov 2018 built in for the 6 month service and requested for them to enable custom mode. Seems to be as others here with no luck.
First dealer had 2 attempts both times saying custom mode is enabled but none of the "Custom" features work. Decided to give another dealer a shot, at the time of booking they said they have enabled this feature on heaps of vehicles previously but now they are saying this feature is actually not available on the cars that came with the pre installed button June 2018 onward, but only on the previous models.

Has anyone yet had any luck with enabling custom mode on their prado?

        Hi Borak,

Thanks for sharing your experience from your dealerships.

I will prove what your dealers have said to you shortly, as I've booked in mine for 18 month service next month, with request of enable the Custom Mode.

My Prado is Jan 18 build, had a manual button installed at 12 month service point, I didn't know there was an option of such a Custom Mode could be enabled.

So I will update what I can find in here soon.

        Cheers,

        • There are a couple of features now called "Custom Mode". When you deliver your vehicle for its service, refer them to page 9 in the Toyota DPF Booklet:

          http://static.toyotamanuals.com.au.s...=1560124800033

Let us know the outcome. Ive been to my Dealer 4 times to enable this mode for the button, and so far zero success.

            Hi RPP,

What I mentioned to them was to get the button working in 28% -180% range rather than the default 150%-180%, which should allow me to initiate a burn anytime, anywhere when the DPF% is in between 28% and 100%. They seemed they understood what I was talking about.

So let's find it out together.

            Cheers,

After two re-generations taken place, I'm pretty sure my dealer did NOT install the Custom Mode successfully. What I have got was 'DPF regeneration in progress" message on display only.

However, the most important part that I explained to them before the job, to use the button to manually active the re-generation when SOOT% is in between 28%-100%, has failed. The button on the dash is still useless....

Well, I'm not surprised, and I'm not going back to Toyota to challenge their skills and knowledge base, I may remove or re-location that button so I can put two usb ports instead, which I believe it makes more sense.

              Cheers!

              • Yes VX. It appears that the button and custom mode may actually be a placebo to shut owners up? Does ANYONE on here actually have it working as they say it should. OR, from another point of view has anyone had their DPF get to the mythical 157% ,had the light flash and the button work THEN? I have had the service boss at a dealer plug in the Techstream computer and go through the whole cycle to show me that it works. BUT in the real world it doesn't. This leads me to think that Toyota still has a bit of work to do on this. That aside my DPF appears to be still working fine with zero problems [ other than the light and switch]. I think lots changed with that last update eg. my cold idle speed is higher than it was but settles to the correct figure when it warms up. Who knows what other parameters changed but as long as it continues to work all good.

                • Just curious with the most recent DPF firmware installed what sort of distance are people getting between burns?

                  • I have been tracking mine since I had the new firmware installed in custom mode.

                    • I cant get mine over about 250km. This is with 10.03l/100km usage. Starting to think its a little odd. Have seen 150km and 170km as well.

                      • Well who'd thunk it? Mine actually did a burn today AND the light actually flashed! 255 km since the last service and dpf fiddle. The burn lasted 7 km. All of the 255km are outer suburban kms with some of it at 80-100 kph. Of course the button did nothing.

                        • Weve got a 2015 GXL, and Ive had the custom mode (ie DPF light flashes on the dash) activated and is working. Were currently doing a year driving around Oz, towing a camper trailer. Ours is a manual, I normally sit on 2000 RPM when cruising depending on the roads - ie 100 km/hr in 6th on bitumen, maybe 80 km/hr in 5th on gravel but both around 2000 rpm. Monitor when it burns with the trip meter.

I reckon it burns based on a set number of engine revolutions - i get 300 km between burns at 100 km/hr, but only 250? when cruising at 80 (also allowing for slow downs/speed ups into and out of corners/grids etc).

I saw 150km and 170km when travelling at 110km/h for about 3hrs. Toyota are looking at the DPF today and tomorrow. Still cant confirm if they are using the differential sensors to determine how full DPF is. My guess is yes it does use the feedback. An example would be that it sees a partial blockage so decreases the km's to full so that a burn is initiated early to remove said blockage. I have also seen other behaviour which indicates the use of the sensors. If I stomp the accelerator sometimes I can see a 2% increase in how full DPF is but once I back off the percentage drops back by 2%. Would really love to know how Toyota have setup the behaviour of a burn.

                            • I would like to know how they do it as well but I doubt they tell their own mechanics let alone customers. I agree with you that it is probably monitoring the pressure in and out, after all that seems the most common sense thing to do, but then things things don't necessarily follow common sense.

                              • Just back from a 9000Km trip to the Kimberley including the Oombulgurri/Carson River Track, Kalumburu & Gibb Roads, Tanami plus & 6Kkm of bitumen.
Had to replace the windscreen at short notice in Kununurra (everybody keeps spares for Toyota's up there), after a Road Train hurled a stone at it.

I logged all 45 DPF burns on my 2018 Prado GXL.
The highway (100-110Km/hr) Regens occurred about every 148Km and took about 30Km to complete. A few DPF Regens started after only 80-90 Kms.

We took 10 days to drive the 430Km Carson River Track. The first 3 days we hardly covered 35Km a day, driving in low range, doing 5-15Km/hr for hours on end. Bent a few under body bash plates and the factory side steps.

9 vehicles in the convoy of which 3 had DPFs, 1 Prado, 1 70 Series Ute and 1 Shorty Pajero.
The 2 Regens on my Prado took 2Kms to complete (whilst driving over tinder dry straw grass over a meter high).
7 flat tyres across the group. The lead vehicle, a 79 Series, broke a tie rod end, we had spares.
The same vehicle broke another on the Gibb River Road at speed. It ended inelegantly with the front wheels splayed out and the front drive train bent heavily.

My vehicle has now clocked 40,000km and the DPF seems to be doing its thing, so far.
