  • Sump plug problems

    G'day all,
Looking for some insight as how to go with addressing an issue on my car. I have a mild oil leak that appears to be coming from my sump plug but I am unsure now. Below are the investigations I have done.
    - First noticed bottom of sump wet and dripping oil (maybe 2 drips overnight)
    - Cleaned area, appeared to be coming from sump plug area.
    - Changed oil/filter. It took a breaker bar to undo the plug and I noticed there was no washer on the plug (won't be going back to that mechanic)
    - Torqued plug to 42nm (minimum number my wrench will do, I know 35 is recommended)
    - 1 week later I checked my work and the bottom of the sump is wet with oil again. No drips though.
    - Felt around the edge of the sump and was dirty, but not wet at all.
    - The rear of the sump where all the heads of the 10mm bolts are was sticky, but not wet at all. Appeared to come from the U joint on the tailshaft that flicks grease everywhere, it also looked very old.
    - Re-torqued sump plug and got a 1/4 turn out of it before the wrench 'clicked'
    - While under car I noticed a small wet area on bottom of turbo, area below turbo had no oil on it.

    My questions are.
    1. I have read that long-term over tightened plugs can cause the sump itself to crack. Has anyone heard of that with the 150?
    2. Is it possible for the sump plug to un-do itself? Hence the ability to turn the wrench further.
    3. Any other clues as to what it could be?

Have you put a washer back on it?

Degrease and hi pressure clean the areas and wait to see where it's coming from.

Today when I found the leak again there was no wetness on the sides of the sump. Does oil remain wet on a vertical surface or does it tend to dry up?

Interesting. I had a thought regarding the sump plug possibly un-doing itself somehow. Went outside and just put a paint mark on the plug and sump to see if it moves out of alignment.
              Cheers for the help!

maybe the threads on the sump plug or the sump have started to stretch , might be worth replacing the plug. yes the holes can crack ive seen it.

                  If it turns out be the sump that is cracked;
                  12102-30020 $106 sump
                  90341-12012 $2.86 plug
                  90430-12031 $1.00 washer

From amayama ex Australia (AUD). Cheaper ex Dubai or Japan but postage can be a killer.
