  • Hi Andy,
    I forgot to ask.
When I put in AMTS's bracket it seemed it might be a very tight fit on top of the small wiring loom going to the Toyota fuel filter. I am hoping it is not pushing down on top of the thin wiring loom clipped into the guard. I unclipped it and then felt on a wet day water would just pour into the engine bay as it is right over the tyre. If I plugged the hole I would have the same problem with space for a bolt etc. So in the end I left it in place. I am hoping it is not really pushing to hard on the wire and will therefore in time damage it.
    Whats your thoughts?
Did you unclip this or just leave it in place?

    thanks
    David

      Hi David,
You can cut the cable clip to release the wiring loom leaving the body clip in place and thus no hole

      • I think I just unclipped it and left the hole David, but what Nick said works better, guess that's something else to check next time I'm under the bonnet.

        Cheers

        • Hi Nick & Andy,
          Thanks for your replies.
          Good idea Nick
I better have a better look and see if it needs to be relocated

          • Bit away from the discussion....

If your vehicle was mostly driven/used in reasonable urban country (aka Canberra) area where you pay more for fuel everyday (again a different point), do you still need to have the extra filter installed? I do understand that it is good insurance but does everyone around the region have one installed or prefer to have one installed? Is the need for filter a region by region issue due to quality of fuel or a good to have just in case?

            Thanks
D4D. How long will it last?

            • Having just paid over 6k for repairs after the fuel in the car became contaminated by black stuff (technical term) I have fitted a extra fine filter before the original under bonnet filter. The big cost in my repairs were the rebuild of the injector pump and replacement injectors (4). I believe a finer filter would of stop these items becoming damaged and thus saved a lot of money.

              Cheers

              • Colin, do you experience the issue in Melbourne where you would expect to find reasonable quality fuel or else where? Was that during warranty period or outside that time frame?

                Thanks

I guess you don't need the extra fuel filter anywhere, it's just extra insurance. The extra fuel filter is one of those things you have to make your own mind up on. In your circumstances its really up to you, I would say you have to have one, but if you are worried it really isn't that expensive.

                    Hey Colin,

That sucks big time. How many km are on your Prado? Is your Prado dealer serviced? Had the factory under bonnet fuel filter ever been replaced? What were the vehicles symptoms, why did you take it in to have it looked at? "Black stuff" could be a lot of different things, did they give you any different info? Sorry for all the extra questions, I'm just curious what happened, as im sure others on here are too. I hope all is well with the car now though.

                    Cheers
                    Andy

                    • Ok! yes dealer serviced for life of vehicle. The car is under a Lease Plan, lease.
Under bonnet fuel filter was never changed prior to this incident. Its a replace as required filter, after it alarms and has gone into by pass mode
Ks on the car was 120,000 at time of issue. First noticed fuel economy was drifting out by .5 lt per hundred and started to see black smoke in the side mirror (from the exhaust) when accelerating away from the lights. I run an Excel spread sheet so have tracked every fill for the life of the car.
The dealer diagnosed the problem as poor fuel (black stuff) I was shown the bits they replaced and the white plastic parts out of the fuel tank had a black film on them. After doing some internet searches' I think it was a bacteria growth.
The dealer drop both tanks and disinfected them, replace the in tank fuel pump (lifting pump), flushed fuel lines, replaced rear and front fuel filters, sent injector out for a clean which failed so they were replaced along with the metal fuel lines, injector pump was overhauled. Total cost $6,200. Not covered under warranty as it was a fuel issue.
Lease Plan put a claim in on the fuel company. I had only used one brand in the previous 10 fills over 7 months. (I do a lot of Ks)
I had only filled up in the Melbourne Metro area albeit across both sides of town, South East & the West.
The Fuel company out sources the claims process and they rejected the claim, sighting their excellent quality control and no other complaints.
When speaking to my friendly service man I asked, How could I prevent a reoccurrence. He suggested a finer filter before the under bonnet filter to protect the expensive bits (injectors and injector pump). He also recommended adding some anti bacteria additive with every third or fourth fill.
That's what I have done and do now.

                      Cheers
                      Colin

                        • Awesome, thanks for that. For all that work at a dearlership, that is actually a good price, mind you Leaseplan really know how to screw us mechanics down
Always good to know what the problem was and what was done to fix it. Most decent mechanics will actually recomend the under bonnet filter is changed every 40,000km regardless of what the service book says, although, without you requesting it they wouldn't get it past the good folk down at Leaseplan.

                            • Get beer/bourbon/rum/whatever from fridge.
                              Install and plumb up correctly.
Pull fuel hose off between factory filter and engine.
Pump hand primer untill fuel flows out without any air in it.
Refit fuel hose and give primer another 2 or so pumps.
Start vehicle and allow to run for 2 minutes.
If the vehicle stalls start the process over again, if it does stall it will wind over a bit before starting though, don't worry, it will start.
                              Check for leaks.
Call missus to show off your handiwork and ask her to get another beer/bourbon/rum/whatevers on the way.

Exactly what I did! I read the instructions several times and went through what was required several times. Check, check the cut fuel hose as described. I even had dinner during install and was done in an hour tops. Prime till you see fuel run into glass bowl on new filter and a little more. No issues.
