    Re: extra fuel filter

Hi Riv39, Mate no worries even a Shell is a long way from me .We have a Caltex and Mobil that's it . BP and Shell are 30 minutes whereas the others are 5minutes .Is there anyway of improving their fuels by an additive ? just asking as I see some guys are already adding stuff but I'm not sure if that is wise especially when under warranty?? Cheers Foxy

Not looking good, hopefully it is only in the older type of injector. Keep an eye out on the thread Big Troubles in Europe. Maybe our Australian goverment might step in like the Spanish goverment did, ye, right, when the flies are crawling up my backside or something.

Roo, where's that thread located mate? I must be blind cause I can't find it

          Re: extra fuel filter

OUCH, that seems to be a problem in EU hope we can sneak passed it all .My girl was built 04 2010 but I saw a notice of an up grade Prado which I believe is not coming to OZ just yet as it is too early since the initial release of the 150 Prado. They claim a substantial boost to power up to 140 KW and Torque up to 480NM using different injectors nozzles and some fine tuning .It seems one of the first things I'll be doing out of warranty is a full 3" system exhaust and maybe a chip with snorkel .That info came from Toyota Australia with regards to the up grade ,Whether that will fix the problem we all could have I don't know ? Certainly from now on I'll try to use 50+ fuel from either BP or Shell .I don't mind paying a little extra as long as it is what they say and claim it to be ? Cheers Foxy

              Thanks Roo

It was me that sent you that message about what filter size to use. Thankyou for your reply, my 150 has now got only 1000 ks on it so am keen to put a second filter on it asap before my interest wanes and I spend the money on bullbars, batterys, springs, tyres etc. It will probably be the best $300 bucks I will ever spend.

                Re: extra fuel filter

Forgive me for my lack of understanding here, but how does going through a 10micron then a 2micron any different than going through a 2 & 2 micron ?? In the end, they both go through the OEM 2micron filter..... and the flow rate is exactly the same for both the 10 & 2 filters.....
As far as the less lubricants in the fuel, isn't that what the fuel companies have done by trying to improve the quality of diesel... ??? I remember years back when u got diesel on your hands it was really oilly, now its not......

                  Toyota filter (2 micron = 2+2)
Are you sure that the genuine filter is 2 micron? I have been told that it is 5.

                    Re: extra fuel filter

Hey Roo, re more refining of diesel these days, could explain the higher price although the refiners claim it is to do with supply and demand. Reduced sulphur fuel is much better for the environment emissions wise and apparently lowers soot output significantly.

                      Re: extra fuel filter

isn't diesel and all it's components liquid? as such, then 10,5 or 2 micron filtration is not going to "hold back" any thing except particles (impurities) and water which was the whole reason this post started in an effort to save our injectors and engines. if we are going the extra mile by filtering out impurities with high flow filters of course, then if there are component failure issues, it falls back on Toyota or the fuel suppliers to correct. diesel fuel is widely used in Europe where there are more diesel cars than petrol. i wonder how they are holding up. surely if it is a fuel issue, there would be an outcry already. i'm using a 2 micron filter with additives added to the fuel every time i fill up. one thing i did note was that the added fuel line must be rated SAE 30R9. i think some of us may be using the R7 that does not hold up to diesel with additives. check the Gates website to see this.

                          Re: extra fuel filter

Hi people, When I started this link I had in mind just to keep the extra impurities which you do pick via Jerry cans and such like as well as water. I also have had people complain to me about certain garages even ones they have frequented often yet still end up with more than they paid for if you know what I mean . I ordered a Racor 120 but found it wasn't suitable so I have now gone for the Racor 490 2 with the bowl rated at 90 gallons per hr x4 =360 liters. This one also comes with a 10 and 30 micron all interchangeable .I noticed with the fuel I had been using, a lot of rattle in the engine but now I have started using a additive and the diesel runs much quieter and seemingly smoother. I know the OE filter is I have been told is 2 micron and the one I'm getting now is also 2 micron . doubling up I'm not sure, I reckon the jury may still be out on it but still it is a question that needs an answer . Thinking I may also order 10 micron filters just for insurance. Cheers Foxy

for those who are interested in the fuel hose SAE 30R7 and R9 ratings, here's the link.

                            Foxy,

i'm using the racor 230R with 2 micron as a prefilter to the OEM one. reason is, it has high flow of 114ltrs / hr. that's enough to feed 10 D4Ds going at 100km/hr assuming they are drawing 10ltrs / 100km and i still have 14 ltrs to spare. so this is more than adequate. using the 2 micron filter means i'm keeping my OEM filter cleaner than i would if i've had used the 10 micron one. i reckon it would be a lot cheaper to replace the Racor filter than the OEM. this is a good post you started to protect our injectors and engines from impurities and water both of which will cause damage, there's no doubt about that. i don't think we should worry about the filter micron size as diesel is a liquid and will flow right through. the issue we should be concern about is the flow rate and the additional fuel hose we have to add. it should be rated to handle diesel with additives which according to Gates should be SAE30R9 (see link above)

                              Thanks Bert.

I used SAE 30R7 (standard hose) when installing my extra filter.
My Father in Law is a Gates distributer, so I will get a bit of SAE 30R9 hose from him, to replace the lesser hose.

                              Thanks again.

                                You're welcomed Steve,

at least you get it from your father in law, i bought mine at $32.00 per meter (that's the minimum they sell at Repco). i used 350mm and the rest is just sitting there. perhaps we could all bulk buy and share? it would save us lots i reckon. btw, what size are you using? i've put on 9.5mm and it slips in with small effort-ie. i'm not stretching it. clamps well too.

                                cheers,
