    Re: Diesel - refuelling problem

Hey people - finally, after 40,000 kms and more than a dozen times to the dealers they have fixed the refueling problem.

They found when they dropped the main tank the breater hose was being pinched of as it had kink in the line. Each time the tank was refitted they would pinch the breather line causing it to close the hose and no breathing.

All this pain for someting so basic!!!!

Anyway, the last three refuels and no problems.

    Nifty.

      Re: Diesel - refuelling problem

      Hi folks,

First refuel on our new Prado....hoping like heck it would be uneventful.... filled it to the very brim, no problems at all...phew.

I can "breathe' a sigh of relief as it appears my breather may fuel tank breather may be ok....

        Re: Diesel - refuelling problem

funny you mention the breather hose being pinched.
i recently extended the fuel tank breather up to the rear wheel arch next to the fuel filler, and i have only had to fill up once since then,
the fuel light was on but it would only let me get 99l in the tank.
i'm wondering if maybe because the check valve is now in the vertical position instead of the horizontal position it is not allowing air to escape the way it should.
i think i might go back and try laying the valve over and see if that makes any difference for the next time i have to fill up.
        gotta be worth a shot...

          Diesel - refuelling problem

Well I had a look at the check valve and there doesn't seem to be any issues with it. The thing that stumps me though is that the fuel light was on and the readout said only 40k's till empty. But I could only get the 99l in the tank. And now the gauge reads full. Surely the light doesnt come on with 50l still in the tank... Surely....

EDIT: just read up a bit on this... lot of info... might be all good after all

Somebody has already done some homework. Have a look at some of these.

pretty interesting reads. basically seems like there is a very large reserve in the tank, just to keep the fuel that recircs in the system cool from the temp generated in the CRD. thats what i can gather anyways

                Diesel - refuelling problem

Okay. Bit of an update. After I had trouble filling up, the guage read full so i I thought all was okay. But I drove around 200k's and the gauge went to just over half. So I thought I'd stop and have another shot at filling up. This time I went a bit slower, maybe around 4-5 sec per litre. And this time it filled to the brim first time. Got in something like $100. Didn't check the litres. But when I went to drive off the cruising range still read only 700k's. The fuel gauge was reading correctly. It took about 60-70k's before the cruising range readout snapped out of it and went to 1200ks. Everything seems to be okay now though. But very wierd...

Refuelling problem solved! I just came back from the servo after filling my car up with Caltex Vortex Diesel when I got to the annoying last part I got the missus and the kids to rock side to side at the same time and it helped clear the airlock very well. Plus it's fun and a good laugh

Resurrecting an old thread here. Picked up a diesel altitude yesterday. It was supplied with about 20L of diesel so I went to fill up (BP) expecting to put about 130L in. Only took 72L and after continuously trying for the next 5 minutes managed to get it up to 77L. Gave up and drove off. With the gauge showing about 3/4 I went for a drive around the block and then pulled back in to the servo. This time it took another 25L and would not go any further. So still about 25-30L short. Very frustrating and I have little confidence that the dealer will be able to resolve it based on previous threads.

I always use BP ultimate diesel, seems to run smoother and foams less ( this is also quoted by BP) I generally always run the fuel down under 1/4 (300km or less on the range) and never seem to have any trouble refuelling. If you use a fast flow pump, it will fill faster but will foam more (never seen a fast flow ultimate pump) don't forget these are designed to allow a truckie to get up to 1000l of fuel into the truck as quickly as possible, their tanks have a 3 inch opening with no restriction as opposed to the openings and restrictions in ours.
Checking for restrictions in the tank inlet and the tank breather would be where I would start. It's either not able to get in due to a restriction in the filler or the air in the tank can't get out fast enough to let the fuel in.

I put 90ltr (approx 1/4 tank to full) of BP standard diesel in mine the other day using a high flow pump and no problem whatsoever. I reckon you have the kinked pipe problem which I thought was metioned in this thread somewhere.

I have had trouble with BP foaming and not filling the tank - but not with Caltex.

Depends on the fuel from BP, they sell the ultimate (costs a premium) which has the foam reduction formula and the standard diesel which will foam more.
Bit of a lottery as to whether you can get ultimate at your local servo, more available around capital city.

That said the makeup of diesel is that it will always foam more than petrol, joys of owning a diesel, just like the dirty filthy pumps or even better, around the side or out the back with no shelter.

Sounds like most of the issues have related to restrictions in the inlet or breather.

I also had trouble with BP foaming and not filling the tank. See earlier post.
Yesterday I filled up at Shell (2nd fill up since getting the car) and it filled all the way with no problems. So initially I thought I had the kinked pipe problem, but now I think the problem was the BP diesel foaming too much.

Funny this thread is about again.. I only use BP diesel and noticed that it fills faster and with less foam, using the normal pump. I reckon it is a better fill with less spill and foam to deal with too.
