  • Just did a 1198 trip from Gold Coast to St. George travelling 100 to 110 and achieved the following
    LPK 9.91
    MPG 28.5
    Kms per Litre 10.01

    Ran like a dream.

    • Got an auto 150 series with 2200km on the clock. Very happy with fuels consumption. Since we drove it off the lot it has averaged 9.2l\100. since last refuel it says 8.9L/100. I do live 15 km out of town so there is a fair amount of highway driving at 110.

Also got a 07 Hilux with the same D4D engine. It does about 10.5l\100. It is a manual and revs a bit higher on the highway though.

      • 32000 km report on VX D4D, average for whole of use, only missed a couple of tanks when I did not fill it, but 9.2 is the average, Wife driving 90% of time doing run around stuff that females do??

Best so far, trip to QLD, loaded with kids and stuff, 8.1 for whole trip, 1650 km on 134 liters, got up to Bris, ran around for 4 days and home on a tank, pretty good I think, me driving at speed limit +/- 5% as conditions allowed. for just the drive up and back the dash average showed just 7.1 l/100 but it is off by approx .3 per 100.

These figures are not off the dash, these are from fuel dockets and speedo readings, the speddo is also super close, checked with 2 different GPS units, is under 1% error and acctually reads less KM than travelled.

All up very very happy with vehicle, still a treat to drive after getting out of my 2002 HDJ79R ute.

        • I live semi rural and already own a VX 150 series Prado (petrol), however my wife drives it 90% of the time. (she is very happy with it!)

I am now looking at buying a second new Prado for myself but this time a GXL D4D. I'll be traveling about 20,000Km a year with about 10,000km local and the rest touring with a 2.2 tonne caravan. Would I be correct in assuming the consumption I could expect with the D4D would be about 9 ltr/100km local and about 15 ltr/100km towing the caravan?

          Thanks in advance!

I have averaged around 13l/100 towing a large 1.5t camper on several trips usually driving at around 100km/h, so your estimate should be right depending on the physical size of the van and the speed you plan to travel.

There is so many variables in what expected economy u "may" get and everyone will tell u something different every time....

              Variables IMO are:
              • Driving Speed & Driving Style (anything over 100k's and economy heads south)
              • Driving location & conditions (Flat area or hills & mountains; windy; slow traffic)
              • Fitted accessories & Vehicle weight (the more accessories fitted the more economy heads south)
              • Tyre type and size
              • The way u work out your economy (ie: read from the Dash or actually working it - there always will be a difference between the 2 - I don't believe the dash economy reading)

Our D4D Prado only has a snorkel; ARB Bullbar & 30mm suspension lift, that's it and normal driving around home by my wife taking the kids to school (26k round trip in suburbs) & the weekly shopping, etc - she averages 11.17ltrs/100kms.
Our last trip through NSW and VIC touring with our 16" Pop-Top Windsor Van & covering some 5600kms in total, we averaged as a whole 16ltrs/100kms and that was through some hilly terrain and usually travelling around 100kms/hr up to sometimes 110kms/hr.

So, from what people will tell u, your experience will be different as one would expect.... In our situation, I often wonder buying a diesel if it was really worth it, when u look at the price difference in fuel. From talking to people at work who have the petrol & they are reporting figures of 13>14.5ltrs/100kms and up here the fuel price difference on average between diesel & ULP is 15cents/ltr difference. Then factor in the better power of the V6 and the decision become clouded; but then there's the better economy when towing in the D4D but u have to ask yourself how often do u do this..... Then there's the difference in 6cyl vs 4cyl rego..... Then u really become confused...... Don't get me wrong, I like our D4D and I went that way because we plan to keep it long term... if I weren't going to keep it long term, then I may have gone with the V6.....

We have 2 4WD's (D4D Prado & a Modified Suzuki Vitara for bush bashing) & a Toyota Aurion that I drive to work. The Vitara I run on PULP; the V6 Aurion on ULP & the D4D on Shell Diesel. I keep accurate fuel records for all 3 cars and the cheapest car to run is:

              1st: Aurion(14.3cents/km - Avg: 10.7ltrs/100kms) - cheapest
              2nd: Vitara(15.5cents/km - Avg: 10.5ltrs/100kms)
3rd: Prado D4D(18.8cents/km - Avg: 12.6ltrs/100kms - this also incl's our trip early in the year, economy is normally avg: 11.2ltrs/100kms ) - dearest

This is just my opinion an I'm sure there will be many others that have better experiences...

Thanks also for the reply. You sound a little like myself by investigating things and leaving no stone unturned. I'm starting to think I'll take over the V6 as it only has 11,000 Km on the clock and buy my wife something smaller that she will be happy with, it will save me quite a few dollars. I just wish it was a D4D!

                • On our trip to Fraser Island, with 2" lift, front bar, rhino bag on roof, fridge, recovery stuff, gears, 5 people (3 little people!)
                  - Melbourne to Wodonga with flapping cargo bag: 11.2L/100k (I didn't tie and load the bag properly).
                  - Rainbow beach to Newcastle: 9.3L/100k
                  - Sydney to Melbourne: 10.2L/100k
The numbers are from the trip computer.

The difference is probably due to the max legal speed. Most of the road from Rainbow beach to Newcastle is at 90k/h.
It looks like the wind resistance from a flapping bag affects the fuel consumption a bit.

I think without the rooftop Rhino bag our Prado can do less than 9L per 100k in optimal conditions. Unfortunately even with the drawers we still need the bag for long trips.

All diesels refills this trip were from BP.

                  • Diesel automatic, 14.000km from beginning, average consumption calculated by refuels 8,7 l/100km. Mixed everyday driving, city, road and highway.

                    • I have some more interesting numbers. Melbourne-Adelaide with no roof tray, 10l/100km.
                      Adelaide-Melbourne same setup 9.4L/100km.
Given I had 9.3L/100 previously with much more gears, the rhino tray and rhino bag, I was expecting around 9L without the tray and luggage bag on the roof. Either the effect of roof tray and luggage bag is not that bad, or the D4D engine can handle the extra load very well

                      • I have noticed a big change in economy after the 20,000 km service. Previously, I had been getting around 9.0 l/100km, but after the service it has jumped to around 9.8. I've got a stock standard 2010 150 series diesel.

Anyone else experienceing the same issues?

I'd say mine has gotten better with more kays on the clock.

Did they do the "Re-flash" upgrade on your ECU for the Transmission ??? This may count for something.....

Definitely, my fuel economy has gone to hell after it. Going to ask them to change it back at next service.

Wooley, you would rather have the 2400rpm hesitation than loose 1ltr/100km in city driving?

I reckon the economy is worse whilst driving in 'D' as opposed to 'S' as well...maybe 0.5ltr/100km around town but this is a guess only.
