I'd imagine they are heavy enough to last several years but I don't know about today's build.

A follow up for my previous readout:-
    filled up today, to the brim, 139 L for 1307 k = 9.4 k/l = 10.64L/100 (The computer fibbed a bit saying 9.8L/100.)

This was achieved with 646 k towing the camper at ~1050kg, 60L Waeco in boot, and 3/4" lift to Prado, with ECB Alloy winch bar, dual batteries and snorkel.

The route was mainly highway at 95 to 105 kph but mostly flat; about 100k was undulating back roads (bitumen) and 100k cross-town traffic.

    HTH's

ps The economy helps make up for the pita huge back door!! LOL
    Thanks for that.

Still looking at options and thinking a lease might be the go for us. I want to tow a camper now, so the auto diesel might tick all the boxes ?

    • On about 40,000 km and been averaging about 10.7km/h in GXL D4D Auto since day dot mixture of about 50/50 freeway and city, off-road one or two days a month on average. Driving through sand / bush doesn't seem to make much odds. Recent trip that was about 90% freeway and 10% bush with a touch of city/town driving averaged out at 10.2. I have no mods (other than child seat) and run factory tyres running at about 29 psi as recommended on road. Perhaps I need to boost the pressure - I have to run them lower than this for to achieve any change of pressure after an hour or more of 100+ freeway driving.

      • Using the Scanguage as my reference. mine currently sits around 13-14ltr/100km.
This has jumped from mid 11's since the Steinbauer was added. I do have bar, winch, lights, 2"lift, roof rack, extra weight with drawers.
The extra power is very nice, but might need to have the fuel turned back, thought it wouldn't have increased that much with the chip added.

Koni/RidePro coils, polyair rear bags, 2nd set alloys/Cooper STT 265/70/17, safari snorkel, bonnet scoop, kaymar wheel spacer, drawers, scan gauge II, roof console, UHF, Hema gps, Tmax winch/plasma rope, Brown Davis b/plates, LED light bar, Redarc charger, ARB compressor, Tambo Camper, Stainless Exhaust, maxtrax, Stein Chip, ARB 78ltr fridge, ARB Rear locker.

        • I've just done 55,000km in a 150 d4d GXL auto with standard everything...and I definately get better than 10.7l/100km (I take it you mean 10.7l/100km and not 10.7km/hr).....but I run 40PSI in all tyres when on the highway....I only run 30PSI when on gravel, 20 PSI on sand and 15 PSI for a short time only at slow speeds on soft soft sand.......I really think on stock tyres and on a stock stock car that 29 PSI is too soft for the highway for the Gradtrek tyres.....despite the lower recommended pressure.

29 PSI might be ok for Japanese cobble stones perhaps, but give 40 PSI a go, you should get better mileage ...at least 8.3l/100km on the highway or better. I am still on the original tyres, with plenty of tread and they are wearing very well, and the car definately drives & steers better at the higher pressure. Give it a try at 40 PSI...let us know what you think ?

          • Updated figures @ 30,000km

            Hi all,

Well my fuel figures have evened out over time at 10.33L/100km (calculated using actual distance and refuel figures). My Toyota's trip computer thinks I am getting around 9L/100km. My driving is around 60:40 (urban:highway).

Re the 6.5L/100km claims... I got around that on trip computer while driving on the freeway from Sydney to Mittagong and back, but it was a cold day, and mostly through roadworks at 80kmh. Definitely not sustainable at freeway speeds. When I filled up again immediately, I calculated 8L/100km.

Does anyone know if the dealer can adjust the trip computer to read a more realistic figure?

            Cheers!

X2 re the 40PSI. Definitely makes a difference and the ride is ok too.

Some heavy reading here. So... I am looking at trading in the V6 or selling private sometime next year. Reading this thread tells me the Auto is 'nice' but has a few electronic issues and towing probs. I am aiming at a manual D4D 150 GXL, for a mix and short to and from work commute, some off roading and very long distance touring, I think the manual would be the go ?

              Thoughts ?
Thanks for the replys. My new manual will be delivered in a few weeks.

              Cheers.

              • I have done a lot of towing with auto, not sure what the electronic issues are that you are talking about.

Economy is almost identical to my mates manual when towing similar campers, 13-14l/100km. My auto is a lot easier to drive in sand.

                • I am in for the 30k service next week, (5 months since first rego), all country driving the overall average is now showing 9.6lt/00.
It was 9.1lt/00 for the first 20,000kms but then I added an ARB delux winch bar with side rails and a 9500kg Warn winch and certainly noticed a drop in the economy immediately. I have had it averaging in the 7's if I back off the trottle to the speed limits. Overall still very happy, since the Holdens & Fords I have been running were no better and only half the size and half the fun.

                  • One thing I've noticed is that fuel economy is very sensitive to anything that effects aerodynamics, such as roof bars or stuff on the roof. I get a bigger drop in economy putting gear on the roof than towing our very large camper.

                    • I haven't reset the average fuel economy in the main odometer gauge since buying mine, it was sitting around 11.0l/ 100km when we left QLD, but we did a lot of running around Clermont with a weekly trip to Emerald and occasional longer run. Since moving back to WA it has dropped to about 10.8 as we are doing more longer runs, with lots of freeway running. On the console gauge I have had the average down to about 6.5 for a tank, but usual average is around 10.7 and into the 9 s for a good distance run at around 100 km/ h. Will be interested what I average when I head up to Sharkbay with the caravan on the back, I would average around 18 - 19 in my old manual zd30 patrol towing a similar size van

                      • Just did 700 km on the inland new England highway (frigging big hills and mountain ranges) loaded up with two adults, three kids and all the shit for a family holidays and 360 kms around town. Refilled after 1062 kms, 105 litres. That's 9.88 litres per hundred kilometers.

                        Happy as..

                        • Mine is 23,000km old and the overall average is 10.4. She gets driven to and from my partners work in peak hour every day, and a "round town" tank will normally hit 10-10.5L/100km which is pretty good for stop/start driving.

My economy blew out by having a roof top tent on top and doing 130kph in the NT for a few thousand km's where I averaged around 13-14L/100km. We also spend a bit of time on the beach, and have done a few miles in the dessert where I also average 11-13L/100km. Overall I am very happy, as it is getting the same economy as the Honda 2000 model CRV my partner used to drive to and from work, but is better on the highway now that I have no roof top tent

                          • I agree Roo, particularly after the 2400rpm flat spot mod. Around town expect 11-12 and country no different. The Prado's display is 1-1.5 ltr/100km out (reads lower consumption than reality).

Edit: I mean 11 - 12 actual not what the Prado's display tells you

                            • I have done around 45000km in the GXL auto diesel and I average 12l/100km. That is the average when using the trip meter and filling up at bowser. By that the readout on the console is out by around 15%, but for what its worth it seems to average 10.5.

                              That is doing 108 indicated in a 100 zone ( gps says 105 ) and 120 ( gps says 115 ) indicated a 110 zone and driving it,
stepped up the a 200 LC for towing,
but had a 2012 and 2010 150 Prado GXL auto diesel in Graphite with Bridgestone D697 A/T. Dobinson C59-300/325 and Bilsteins. Accessories : two baby seats. Sidewinder`s Dual Battery isolator and rear power outlet kit. Pirana Battery tray, Hayman Reese towbar with Toyota wiring kit and Brains`s guard.

From my information it's 9.5 to 11L/100kms around town and if you start adding bits like a rooftop tent and a rack, 4wding, it will go as high as 14L/100kms.
                                The Roo.
Actually not a joke, but only seen directly after refuelling and after gentle acceleration up to 60km/h around town and then not for very long, as I said I generally average in the 10's however was sitting on 20l/100 on the console gauge from Shark Bay to Greenough punching into a strong head wind towing the van, with a kayak on the roof.
