  • More fuel info:

Someone asked what percentage setting I have my SGII set at, it's set at 46.8%. I amazed how consistent the D4D is with regards to fuel burn. Here are my numbers for the last few refills and the best bit is, the last fill that we did a 250 km trip up into the Barringtons and back, still averaging great figures.

    28/08/12
    1265km
    52kph average
    131.2 litres total = 10.37 L/100km

    14/08/12
    1264km
    51kph average
    132 litres total = 10.44 L/100km

    27/07/12
    1302km
    57kph average
    136 litres total = 10.44 L/100km

My fuel increases to 12.2 L/100km towing my camper on long road trips. Not bad considering the ARB Bar, lift and other gear. In a few weeks my new light truck tyres go on and I will fitting my roof rack, with my awning so the fuel will go up. I am happy with that and think the D4D is great !

    • Im interested to know the real safe range of my new Prado. Still on my first tank of fuel in my new D4D which was filled up by the dealer at 45klm. The low fuel light came on at 1415klm (1370klm since refuel) and the trip computer says the cars been doing 9.1 ltr/100k since full. I reckon that it will be a typical .5 ltr under reading so assuming a real 9.6L/100 I should be able to get 1562klm from a full tank (150ltr/9.6x100). At 1460 now (1415 since full) and the computer says I have 30 klm to go until empty.

I'm going to drive it until it it's done 1570klm (1525 since last filled) then fill it. I reckon it should take around 146 litres. We will soon see!

If I'm right this means my car can run nearly 200klm until empty (about 20 litres left) after the low fuel light turns on, and about 75klm after the computer says 0klm left. If I'm wrong I'll learn how to prime a diesel.

Does this sound about right or should I be more careful?

        • Bloody hell, this car is brilliant. Another 1227kms, average speed 59km/hr and averaging 10.2 litres per hundred kilometres.

Never a petrol 4WD for me, ever again.....

          • Well this happened today.

This classic from Seinfeld kept running through my mind.

            http://youtu.be/TuEdU_lrtZk

There's clearly a problem with the cars computer. Cruising range = zero, needle above empty. Drove for another 20km before chickening out and putting fuel in the tank. Forgot to look at how much i put into the tank.

            • I have filled up for the 2nd time so now I can get an actual consumption/economy. Approx 1,300km on 139L = 10.69L per 100km. This was city driving and the computer was showing 9.3L - 9.9L per 100km for most of the time. Also cruise control wasn't used at all. I'm wondering what effect does cruise control have on city driving economy?
              Cheers.

              • jayden, those numbers are pretty good IMO, I'm lucky to get better than 11-13 around town although that is driving in Sydney not Perth....

                • I got 1312km on 130 litres (~9.9l/100km), 50/50 city/highway. Thats with dual battery, steel tent rack and roof top tent. Computer was showing 9.3lt/100km.

                  • 5 people in the car, cargo area half full, some gear on the roof, fully loaded lifestyle 360i camper on the back. Reckon close to 4.3 tonne complete... And remember, my Prado isn't the bog stock leased model either....

                    • I wonder about the figures that we see on the trip computer ? I think they do a bit of data juggling to try and maximise the displayed readings . Has anyone actually done some external monitoring to confirm the trip computer readings ?
                      Cheers Ross

                      • Ross, from my calculations after refilling the tank I recon that the display readings are not accurate if you drive mostly in the city and are 1-2 litres per 100km under true consumption. Country or combo (e.g. 50/50) are much more accurate. The more country driving the more accurate the reading IMO.

                        • Does the fuel economy alter a great deal between the GXL's & the VX/Kak?

                          - I appreciate the there would be some difference between the wheel sizes as the 18" have a slightly greater rolling resistance/distance. Obviously there would also be some extra weight in the top 2, handling factors (with KDSS) etc.

Are the differences between actual fill calculations & computer just averaged out between the Prado model ranges or would they be calculated as per the specifics of each car & if so can you have the mods you put on entered into the computer for a more accurate reading?

                          • My trip computer shows 7.6 - 7.7 most of the time based on probably 50/50 town/country. Fuel consumption from my sat nav calculates slightly more at around 7.9/100k. I would be really depressed if the consumption went into double figures.

I'm also interested in how accurate you all think the range display is. The car is meant to have a tank of 150L, yet I can drive for almost 100k with the range reading zero and yet I have never put more than about 136L in the tank. Is the fuel reserve really that much? I haven't been brave enough yet to run more than 100k with the range reading zero.

                            • My GX D4D (bog standard) with 55K, manual, is giving me an average of 9.1 according to the computer. It's interesting that this does not vary much between "city" (well WA's version of one) or country. I'm very happy with the consumption.

see my above post #205. I'm pulling 12.4 fully loaded with camper trailer and family of five on the road. Weighs total of 4.3 tonne and see my build page, my Prado definitely not stock... Check out this side on pic..
