Throw on a roof rack, draws, fridge, cargo barrier, Awning, bashplates, bigger wheels, side steps, tools and that number will just be a memory..Last edited by gumboot; 28-03-2014, 08:16 PM.Robert

In fact if you commute on the Iron Knob Rd you should be able to get even better than thatSteve

anyways, the running costs of a 150 diesel are pretty sensational. our 2012 xc60 d5 gets 8.8 l/100 after 22,000ks on a similar city / country mix without the ability, weight and comfort of the 150.
as i said before, i love this car!

I spent a lot of time trying to work our why fuel calculations never added up exactly until I realised two things:
1. Fuel stations pump values are way out sometimes, mainly the cheaper the fuel stop (discount outlets) the worse they are. I did some detail testing for two years with my Patrol and found that shopping centre discount fuels ALWAYS fitted more fuel in the tank than the regular outlets. Funny that. Which always made the fuel economy appear worse. I made the exact same 1000km round trip every month for two years and ALWAYS put more fuel in the tank with discount fuels, and ALWAYS but less in with regular fuel stations. The difference was 3-5%. So to be accurate you need to use the same station and same pump at least. But this still isn't scientific.
2. The cars tripmeter is usually out depending on how accurate the calibration is to tyre size. There are two ways to check. Use a GPS to calculate a decent length trip, say 50km or more. You can trust these distances to an accuracy high enough to not worry about subtle errors in topography and geometry (most free services use one of three data sources and they are all very clever, Google is reliable enough as I use there geodetic data a lot) and then take the trip and compare you trip meter. Do this several times with several routes and take an average, then secondly find a speedo check on the highway, set you car to a constant speed, usually 100kmh indicated (you can use you GPS too for speed as it uses the Doppler effect to calculate you speed to 0.1kmh) and then time the 0-5km run. Do the distance over time check to compare you speed, and then note the trip distance which should read the same error as the GPS method.
Knowing the two corrections you can make a consistent fuel use calculation every time you fill, with the only unknown being how accurate the pump is your using. You can also rest assured that buying full price fuel isn't dearer to discount fuel when you realise that they are pretending to pump an extra few L in every fill.
I am in the process of doing this with the Prado and already the fuel use calculation on the dash is low by 1L/100km. My guess is the trip is out by 10% (under reading the real distance traveled) which seems normal.-=2014 GXL D4D Auto Graphite, Firestone Airbags, ARB/Optima D34 Dual Battery, ARB UVP, TJM Airtech Snorkel=-

The petrol pumps should always have a certification sticker on them so in theory they are checked, but only annually.
There's also the old story about the difference between filling up in hot versus cold conditions, but I've never found any facts on this.Steve

There would be a limit they had to adhere to I'm sure but the cheap fuel always ends up putting more fuel in. Even if the automatic cut off is set to lower sensitivity you'd fit an extra litre in every fill.-=2014 GXL D4D Auto Graphite, Firestone Airbags, ARB/Optima D34 Dual Battery, ARB UVP, TJM Airtech Snorkel=-

I've done 5000kms now and found the average to be around 9-10L for the 50/50 highway urban trips, getting about 1300-1400kms and fitting 140L in the tank when DTE reads 0.-=2014 GXL D4D Auto Graphite, Firestone Airbags, ARB/Optima D34 Dual Battery, ARB UVP, TJM Airtech Snorkel=-
